Edwin J. Gregson
Edwin Janss Gregson (August 7, 1938 – June 4, 2000) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. He was the trainer of Gato Del Sol who won the 1982 Kentucky Derby. He died on June 4, 2000, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In his honor, a charitable institution founded by the association of California Thoroughbred Trainers (CTT) designed to "enhance the quality of life of California's backstretch workers and their families" was renamed the Edwin J. Gregson Foundation. Personal life and education Edwin's father George Gregson, from Bisbee, Arizona, worked for Janss Investment Company. He met Patricia Cluff Janss there and they married. Gregson was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Holmby Hills. His uncle Edwin Janss Jr. was a real estate developer. His grandfather owned the 10,000 acre Janss Conejo Ranch. Apple Blossom Handicap
The Apple Blossom Handicap is a Grade I American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares that are four years old or older, run under handicap conditions over a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt track held annually in April at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The 2022 running carried a purse of $1,000,000. History The race over the years has become the premier event for distaffers in the Spring, however its beginnings were inconsistent and were far from what we see today. The Del Mar Oaks is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in mid August at the Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. Open to three-year-old Filly, fillies, it is contested at a distance of one and one-eighth miles (9 furlongs) on the turf. Since 1994 it has been a Graded stakes race, Grade I event. Daytona Stakes
The Daytona Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for horses three years old and older run over the distance of about furlongs on the downhill turf scheduled annually in late May at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. History The event was inaugurated in 1968 as the San Simeon Handicap The race has been run at a variety of distances and track surfaces. The race was originally run on the dirt but in 1980 was switched to the downhill turf course. Since that time, it has only been run on dirt when the turf course was unusable due to weather-related conditions. The San Marcos Stakes is an American Grade II Thoroughbred horse race held annually in late January or early February at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Open to horses aged four and older, it is raced on turf over a distance of one and one-quarter miles. Inaugurated in 1952 as a one-mile race on dirt, in 1954 it was changed to one and one-quarter miles and became Santa Anita Park's first graded stakes race on turf. The San Antonio Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Raced on the dirt, it is for horses age three and older. In 2017, the distance was shortened from miles to miles. The race was originally run under handicap conditions but is now run under allowance weight conditions, with specified weight reductions for horses who meet certain conditions. The San Antonio has been a Grade II event since 1990. The current purse is $200,000. The San Antonio was traditionally run in February and was frequently used as a prep race for the Santa Anita Handicap. In 2017, the race was run once in February, and then again on December 26, the opening day of the Santa Anita winter-spring meet. With its new position in the stakes calendar, the race now serves as a prep for the Pegasus World Cup. Sunset Handicap
The Sunset Handicap was an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually during the third week of July at Hollywood Park Racetrack in inglewood, California. The Grade III event is open to horses, age three and up, willing to race one and one-half miles on turf. With the closure of Hollywood Park at the end of 2013 the Sunset Handicap ceased to exist. Inaugurated in 1938 as the Aloha Handicap, in 1940 it was renamed the Sunset Handicap. It was raced on dirt until 1967. Gold Cup At Santa Anita Stakes
The Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes is a Grade I American thoroughbred horse race for horses age three and older over a distance of miles on the dirt held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California in May. The race currently offers a purse of $400,000. History Early beginnings The race inaugurated in 1938 at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California as the Hollywood Gold Cup. Hollywood Park Racetrack opened its doors on June 10, 1938, and Seabiscuit, under jockey George Woolf, won the $50,000 added race's inaugural running on July 16. History The inaugural running of the event as part of the Oak Tree Racing Association fall meeting at Santa Anita Park was on 10 October 1981 as the Yankee Valor Handicap for three-year-olds and older over a distance of miles on the dirt and was won by Rogers Red Top Farm's Shamgo who ridden by US Hall of Fame jockey Laffit Pincay Jr. finishing fast to win by a neck over Major Sport in a time of 1:42.80.
