Edwin Bakker
Edwin Bakker (born 20 October 1967) is head of the knowledge and research department of the Netherlands Police Academy and professor of Terrorism Studies at Leiden University. Biography Bakker was born on 20 October 1967 in Leiden, in the Netherlands. In 1997, Bakker obtained a PhD degree with his thesis on minority conflicts in Slovakia and Hungary. He graduated from Groningen University, where he studied Economic Geography. Before joining the Police Academy he was the director of the Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism (CTC) of Leiden University Campus The Hague, and director of the Institute of Security and Global Affairs. From 2007 to 2011, Bakker was a fellow at the Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’. He was head of the Security and Conflict Programme. Beatrice De Graaf
Beatrice A. de Graaf (born 19 April 1976) is a Dutch history professor at the Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University. Her areas of expertise are terrorism, international relations and security and the modern history of Europe. Career De Graaf studied History and German at the University of Utrecht and the University of Bonn. In December 2004 she obtained her PhD with a dissertation on the relationship between the GDR, the peace movement and the Dutch churches. In 2005 she received the Max van der Stoel Human Rights Prize. After her PhD, De Graaf worked in Utrecht as a university lecturer. In 2007 she transferred to Leiden University, where she co-founded the ''Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism'' (CTC), attached to The Hague campus. In 2012, she was appointed professor of 'Conflict and security in historical perspective' at the CTC. Terrorism, in its broadest sense, is the use of criminal violence to provoke a state of terror or fear, mostly with the intention to achieve political or religious aims. The term is used in this regard primarily to refer to intentional violence during peacetime or in the context of war against non-combatants (mostly civilians and neutral country, neutral military personnel). Islamic terrorism (also known as Islamist terrorism or radical Islamic terrorism) refers to terrorist acts with religious motivations carried out by fundamentalist militant Islamists and Islamic extremists. Incidents and fatalities from Islamic terrorism have been concentrated in eight Muslim-majority countries (Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, and Syria), while four Islamic extremist groups (Islamic State, Boko Haram, the Taliban, and al-Qaeda) were responsible for 74% of all deaths from terrorism in 2015. The annual number of fatalities from terrorist attacks grew sharply from 2011 to 2014 when it reached a peak of 33,438, before declining to 13,826 in 2019.
