''Edwardsiella'' is a genus of gram-negative, fermentative bacteria of the family Hafniaceae. It was first discovered in snakes in 1962. Description A genus of gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria of the family Hafniaceae, they are occasionally opportunistic pathogens of humans. ''Edwardsiella ictaluri'' (also known as enteric septicaemia of catfish, hole in the head diseaseThis term is also used for head and lateral line erosion, an unrelated disease affecting many aquarium fish species. and ESC) is a member of the family Hafniaceae. The bacterium is a short, gram negative, pleomorphic rod with flagella.
