Edward Weil
Edward Weil (April 12, 1872 – March 4, 1932) was a Jewish-American lawyer, politician, and judge from New York. Life Weil was born on April 12, 1872, in New York City, New York. His father was Isaac Weil, a German immigrant and garment worker. Weil attended Grammar School No. 15 and the old Fifth Street school. He then went to the New York University School of Law, graduating from there with an LL.B. in 1893. He was admitted to the bar in 1898 and developed an extensive law practice in New York City. He initially had a private practice in Harlem, later practicing in Yorkville. In 1910, Weil was elected to the New York State Assembly as a Democrat, representing the New York County 22nd District. He served in the Assembly in 1911, 1912, and 1913. He lost the 1913 re-election to Republican Benjamin E. Moore. Edward Swann
Edward Swann (March 10, 1862 – September 19, 1945) was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician from New York. From November 4, 1902 to March 3, 1903, he served part of one term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Life He was born on March 10, 1862, in Madison, Florida. Swann graduated from Columbia Law School in 1886, was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in New York City. He entered politics as a member of Tammany Hall. Congress Swann was elected as a Democrat to the 57th United States Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Amos J. Cummings and served from December 1, 1902, to March 3, 1903. Louis Israel Newman (December 20, 1893 – March 9, 1972) was a prominent United States Reform rabbi and author. Early life Born in Providence, Rhode Island, on December 20, 1893, to Paul and Antonia (née Hecker) Newman, Louis Israel Newman attended Brown University (B.A. 1913), and then went on to receive an M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1917, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1924. The Tribe of Ben-Hur was a fraternal organization based on the novel '' Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ'' by Lew Wallace. In 1930 it became the Ben-Hur Life Association. History The idea of starting a fraternal organization based on ''Ben-Hur'' had first been broached by D. W. Gerard and F. L. Snyder, both of Crawfordsville, Indiana. In November 1893 they held a conference with Lew Wallace asking for his consent to form the order. Wallace consented and secured the permission from his publishers, but objected to the proposed name, "Knights of Ben-Hur", saying "there were only tribes in those days", and suggested "Tribe of Ben-Hur" instead. The Order was incorporated in the state of Indiana on January 9, 1894 and held the first meeting of its "Supreme Tribe" on January 16. Ex-governor Ira Joy Chase was elected the first Supreme Chief. History The Elks began in 1868 as a social club for minstrel show performers, called the "Jolly Corks".
