Edward W. Seymour
Edward Woodruff Seymour (August 30, 1832 – October 16, 1892) was a Democratic Party (United States), Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from Connecticut, son of Origen S. Seymour, Origen Storrs Seymour, great-nephew of Horatio Seymour (Vermont politician), Horatio Seymour. Born in Litchfield, Connecticut, Seymour attended the public schools and was graduated from Yale College in 1853. He studied law. He was Admission to the bar in the United States, admitted to the bar in 1856 and practiced in Litchfield and Bridgeport, Connecticut. He served as member of the State house of representatives from 1859 to 1860, and from 1870 to 1871. He served in the State senate in 1876. Seymour was elected as a Democratic Party (United States), Democrat to the 48th United States Congress, Forty-eighth and 49th United States Congress, Forty-ninth Congresses (March 4, 1883 – March 3, 1887). Litchfield, Connecticut
Litchfield is a town in and former county seat of Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 8,192 at the 2020 census. The boroughs of Bantam and Litchfield are located within the town. There are also three unincorporated villages: East Litchfield, Milton, and Northfield. Northfield, located in the southeastern corner of Litchfield, is home to a high percentage of the Litchfield population. History Originally called Bantam township, Litchfield incorporated in 1719. The town derives its name from Lichfield, in England. In 1751 it became the county-seat of Litchfield county, and at the same time the borough of Litchfield (incorporated in 1879) was laid out. The 48th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, consisting of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. Seymour, Semel or St. Maur, is the name of an English family in which several titles of nobility have from time to time been created, and of which the Duke of Somerset is the head. Origins The family was settled in Monmouthshire in the 13th century. The original form of the name, which was resumed by the dukes of Somerset from early in the 19th century to 1923, seems to have been St. Maur, of which William Camden says that Seymour was a later corruption. It appears that about the year 1240 Gilbert Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, assisted William St. Maur to wrest a place called Woundy (now Undy), near Caldicot in Monmouthshire, from the Welsh. Woundy and Penhow, at the latter of which he made his residence, were the property of Sir Richard St. Maur at the end of the 13th century, but they were lost by the family through the marriage of Sir Richard's great-great-granddaughter, the only child of John St. Maur, who died in 1359.
