Edward W. Scudder
Edward Wallace Scudder (August 12, 1822 – February 3, 1893) was a justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1869 until his death. He graduated Princeton University in 1841 and then studied law with the Hon. William L. Dayton. He was admitted as an attorney in 1844, and called to the bar in 1848; Scudder was elected to the New Jersey Senate, and served his term there of three years, ending in 1865, the last year serving as president. He was appointed judge by Governor of New Jersey Theodore Fitz Randolph in 1869, by Governor Joseph D. Bedle in 1876, reappointed by Governor George C. Ludlow in 1883, and by Governor Leon Abbett in 1890. He died February 3, 1893, and is buried at Riverview Cemetery in Trenton. New Jersey Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of New Jersey is the highest court in the U.S. state of New Jersey. In its current form, the Supreme Court of New Jersey is the final judicial authority on all cases in the state court system, including cases challenging the validity of state laws under the state constitution. It has the sole authority to prescribe and amend court rules and regulate the practice of law, and it is the arbiter and overseer of the decennial legislative redistricting. One of its former members, William J. Brennan Jr., became an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. New Jersey Court Of Errors And Appeals
Prior to 1947, the structure of the judiciary in New Jersey was extremely complex, including Court of Errors and Appeals in the last resort in all causes. The Court of Errors and Appeals was the highest court in the U.S. state of New Jersey from the enactment of the state's 1844 constitution until the enactment of the state's 1947 constitution. The name of the court derived from its function of hearing appeals and correcting previous courts errors in judgment. The court was abolished by the 1947 constitution, and replaced as the state's highest court by the New Jersey Supreme Court. Richard Betts Scudder (May 13, 1913 – July 11, 2012) was an American newspaper pioneer, newspaper publisher, journalist, and co-founder of the MediaNews Group, the second largest newspaper company in the United States. He served as MediaNews' chairman from 1985 until 2009. Scudder is also considered an innovator and pioneer of newspaper recycling. He founded the Garden State Paper Company, which later became one of the world's largest newspaper recycling companies. The ''Newark Evening News'' was an American newspaper published in Newark, New Jersey. As New Jersey's largest city, Newark played a major role in New Jersey's journalistic history.
