Edward Stanley, 1st Baron Monteagle
Edward Stanley, 1st Baron Monteagle KG (1460?–1523) was an English soldier who became a peer and Knight of the Garter. He is known for his deeds at the Battle of Flodden. Life Born about 1460, he was fifth son of Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby, by his first wife Eleanor, daughter of Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury. He was knighted during the reign of Edward IV by Richard, Duke of Gloucester on 24 August 1482 at the capture of Berwick upon Tweed. On 17 April 1483 he was one of the pall-bearers at Edward IV's funeral. His father's marriage with Henry of Richmond's mother and services at the battle of Bosworth gained Henry's favour for the family, when he became King Henry VII. Edward became High Sheriff of Lancashire for life in the autumn of 1485; on 15 October he was directed to provide against Scottish attacks, and on 1 December he was granted the office of keeper of New Park, Langley; he also became knight of the body to the king. Background and education The eldest son of Lord Stanley and the Hon. Sibyl Cadogan, daughter of Viscount Chelsea, his grandfather was Edward Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby, a British Ambassador to Paris. He was educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford. Edward John Stanley, 6th Baron Sheffield, 6th Baron Stanley of Alderley and 5th Baron Eddisbury (9 October 1907 – 3 March 1971) was a British peer. He was the son of the Arthur Stanley, 5th Baron Stanley of Alderley (1875–1931) and Margaret Evelyn Gordon (1875–1964). He was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford. Lord Stanley oversaw the loss of the family's ancestral estate at Alderley Park. With a fondness for gambling, wine and marriage, he had to pay for four divorce settlements, and death duties, even at pre-war levels, for both the 4th and 5th Barons. When the mansion at Alderley Park was destroyed by fire in 1931 he moved into the former farmhouse. When he sold the estate in 1938 to the property developers Hambling Crundall and Co Ltd., many of his older tenants were forced to leave the village. Edward Montagu Cavendish Stanley, Lord Stanley, (9 July 1894 – 16 October 1938) was a British Conservative politician. The eldest son of the 17th Earl of Derby, he held minor political office before being appointed Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs in 1938, sitting in the cabinet alongside his brother Oliver Stanley. However, Stanley died only five months after this appointment, aged 44; his eldest son, Edward John Stanley, later succeeded to the earldom in his stead. Edward Stanley (cricketer)
Major Edward Stanley (29 June 1852 – 7 April 1896) was an English military officer who played one first-class cricket match for Somerset County Cricket Club as an emergency stand-in in 1884. Somerset had arrived in Manchester a player short for their fixture against Lancashire, and had to seek special permission to include Stanley in their team. Stanley lived in Manchester, but had been born in Somerset, and thus qualified for the county. His only first-class appearance was not successful; he did not bowl, and scored no runs in either innings of the match. Life and career Edward Stanley was born in Charlton Horethorne, a village between Sherborne and Wincanton in south-east Somerset, on 29 June 1852. He was the son of Edmond Stanley Stanley, a vicar. Edward Lyulph Stanley, 4th Baron Sheffield, 4th Baron Stanley of Alderley and 3rd Baron Eddisbury PC (16 May 1839 – 18 March 1925) was an English peer. Life He was the son of Edward Stanley, 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley, and the former Henrietta Dillon-Lee. He attended Eton College between 1851 and 1857, gaining the Tomline Prize for mathematics in 1857. He read Greats at Balliol College, Oxford, gaining a first-class degree and fellowship to the college in 1861. He was called to the bar in 1865. Stanley (then known as the Honourable Edward Lyulph Stanley) contested Oldham, in the Liberal interest, at elections in 1872, 1874, 1880 and 1885. He only won the 1880 contest and served in the House of Commons during the 1880–1885 Parliament. He was appointed a Privy Counsellor in 1910. Edward Stanley (Bridgwater MP)
Edward James Stanley DL JP (16 December 1826 – 29 September 1907), was a British Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1882 to 1906. Stanley was the son of Edward Stanley, of Cross Hall, Lancashire, a Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for that county, and his wife Lady Mary Maitland, daughter of James Maitland, 8th Earl of Lauderdale. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. He was a Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for both Somerset and Lancashire and was High Sheriff of Somerset in 1880. Stanley was elected Member of Parliament for Somerset West at a by-election in 1882 and held the seat until it was reorganised under the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885. At the 1885 general election he was elected MP for Bridgwater and held the seat until he retired from the House of Commons in 1906 at the age of 79. Stanley died in September 1907, aged 80.
