Edward Sanford (New York Politician)
Edward Sanford (1805 – 1876) was an American lawyer, poet, essayist, political writer and politician from New York. Life He was the son of Chancellor Nathan Sanford (1777–1838). He graduated from Union College in 1824. Then he studied law with Benjamin F. Butler, and was admitted to the bar in 1825. He practiced law for a few years, but abandoned this to become a writer and newspaper editor. Edward Sanford was a member of the New York State Assembly (New York Co.) in 1843 and 1844; and a member of the New York State Senate (1st D.) in 1846 and 1847. In the New York state election, 1847, he ran on the Democratic and Anti-Rent tickets for Secretary of State of New York, but was defeated by Whig Christopher Morgan. His sister Mary Sanford (1814–1841) was married to State Senator Peter Gansevoort Peter Gansevoort (July 17, 1749 – July 2, 1812) was a Colonel in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Nathan Sanford
Nathan Sanford (November 5, 1777 – October 17, 1838) was an American politician. Early life Sanford was born on November 5, 1777, in Bridgehampton, New York. He was the son of Thomas Sanford and Phebe (née Baker) Sanford, a family of farmers and tradesmen. He attended Yale University, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in New York City. Career In 1803, he was appointed as United States Attorney for the District of New York, and remained in office until 1815 when the district was split into the Northern and the Southern District of New York. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1808-09 and 1811. In 1811, he was elected Speaker on January 29, but could not attend the session after February 10 because of ill health. Christopher Morgan (June 4, 1808 – April 3, 1877) was an American attorney and politician from Auburn, New York. He was most notable for his service as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1839 to 1843. Early life Morgan was born in Aurora, New York on June 4, 1808, a son of Christopher Morgan (1777-1834) and Nancy (Barber) Morgan. He was educated in Cayuga County and attended Yale College, from which he graduated in 1830. He began to study law with an attorney in Aurora, and completed his studies with Elijah Miller and William H. Seward in Auburn. Morgan was then admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Aurora. The 1847 New York state election was held on November 2, 1847, to elect the lieutenant governor, the secretary state, the state comptroller, the attorney general, the state treasurer, the state engineer, three Canal Commissioners and three Inspectors of State Prisons, as well as all members of the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate. History The New York State Constitution of 1846 legislated the incumbent state officers and members of legislature out of office. The 70th New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 5 to December 15, 1847, during the first year of John Young's governorship, in Albany. Background Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1821, 32 Senators were elected on general tickets in eight senatorial districts for four-year terms. They were divided into four classes, and every year eight Senate seats came up for election. Assemblymen were elected countywide on general tickets to a one-year term, the whole Assembly being renewed annually. On May 13, 1845, an "Act recommending a Convention of the people of this State" was passed, submitting at the next State election to the people the question whether they wanted to call a convention to amend the State Constitution.
