Edward Sandford (British Army Officer)
Edward Albert Sandford (22 October 1910 – 13 May 1995) was an English association football, footballer who played as an inside forward. During his professional career from 1930 to 1943 he represented West Bromwich Albion F.C., West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield United F.C., Sheffield United, Morris Commercial Cars, Morris Commercial and the England national football team. Career Sandford was born in Handsworth, West Midlands, Handsworth, Birmingham. As a youth he played football for Tantany Athletic, Overend Wesley, Birmingham Carriage Works F.C. and Smethwick Highfield. In October 1929, while still an amateur, he joined West Bromwich Albion F.C., West Bromwich Albion, the club that his uncle Abraham Jones (footballer), Abe Jones had represented between 1896 and 1901. Handsworth () is a suburb and an inner-city area of Birmingham in the West Midlands. Historically in Staffordshire, Handsworth lies just outside Birmingham City Centre and near the town of Smethwick. History The name ''Handsworth'' originates from its Saxon owner Hondes and the Old English word ''weorthing'', meaning farm or estate. It was recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1086, as a holding of William Fitz-Ansculf, the Lord of Dudley, although at that time it would only have been a very small village surrounded by farmland and extensive woodland.
