Edward Raquello
Edward Raquello (born Edward Zylberberg Kucharski; 14 May 1900 – 24 August 1976) was a Polish-American actor of stage and screen.Hanke p.104 Raquello emigrated to the United States in March 1926. Although from Eastern Europe, he specialized in playing Latin Lover roles in Hollywood. He also performed frequently on the stage. For instance, in 1931, he was in the cast of ''Wonder Bar'', headlined by Al Jolson. In 1932, he was in ''New York to Cherbourg'' at the Forrest Theatre, New York City. In 1933, he appeared with Rose Hobart and Humphrey Bogart at the Booth Theatre in the comedy, ''Our Wife''. In June 1934, he co-starred with Betty Bronson in ''Genius in Love'' at the Elverhoj Theatre in Kingston, New York. In January 1935, he starred as Al Pomo, Public Enemy Number One, in ''Nowhere Bound'', a melodrama about undesirable aliens on board a deportation train; written by Leo Birinski, it was presented at the Imperial Theatre in New York City. ''The Last Express'' is an adventure video game designed by Jordan Mechner and published by Broderbund in 1997 for PC. Players take on the role of an American who accepts an invite by a friend to join them on the Orient Express, days before the start of World War I, only to become involved in a maelstrom of treachery, lies, political conspiracies, personal interests, romance and murder, upon boarding the train. The game is unique in how it was created, its non-linear story, and in how events in the game are conducted within real-time. The game was a commercial disappointment following its release, but received highly positive reviews and a positive post-release response. ''Calling Philo Vance'' is a 1940 American mystery/comedy film released by Warner Bros. and starring James Stephenson as the dilettante detective Philo Vance, his only appearance as the character; Margot Stevenson co-stars. The film also features Henry O'Neill, Edward Brophy, Sheila Bromley and Ralph Forbes. It was directed by William Clemens from a screenplay by Tom Reed, based on the 1933 novel ''The Kennel Murder Case'' by S.S. Van Dine, which had been made into a film in 1933, starring William Powell and Mary Astor. For this adaptation of the story, Vance is on international assignment from the United States government to investigate traffic in wartime aircraft designs. ''The Girl from Mexico'' is a 1939 American comedy film directed by Leslie Goodwins and written by Lionel Houser and Joseph Fields. The film stars Lupe Vélez, who plays a hot-headed, fast-talking Mexican singer taken to New York for a radio gig, who decides she wants the ad agency man for herself. This low-budget film's unexpected box-office success resulted in a sequel, ''Mexican Spitfire'', and eventually a film series of seven films all together. ''Idiot's Delight'' is a 1939 MGM comedy drama with a screenplay adapted by Robert E. Sherwood from his 1936 Pulitzer-Prize-winning play of the same name. The production reunited director Clarence Brown, Clark Gable and Norma Shearer eight years after they worked together on '' A Free Soul''. The play takes place in a hotel in the Italian Alps during 24 hours at the beginning of a world war. The film begins with the backstory of the two leads and transfers the later action to a fictitious Alpine country rather than Italy, which was the setting for the play. In fact, Europe was on the brink of World War II. (The studio's attempts to make the film palatable for the totalitarian states—including the hazy geographical location and the scrupulous use of Esperanto in speech and signage—were a waste of time.
