Edward Perceval
Major-General Sir Edward Maxwell Perceval (13 August 1861 – 26 November 1955) was a British Army officer. Military career Educated at Royal Academy, Gosport and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Perceval was commissioned into the Royal Artillery on 19 May 1880. He saw action in the Second Boer War for which he was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order. He became Commander, Royal Artillery for 2nd Infantry Division in April 1914, and deployed to France with the British Expeditionary Force in August 1914 at the start of the First World War. He became General Officer Commanding the 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division, which was also engaged on the Western Front, in July 1915 and, after falling ill, returned to the UK to become General Officer Commanding the 68th (2nd Welsh) Division in December 1917. Farnham
Farnham ( /ˈfɑːnəm/) is a market town and civil parish in Surrey, England, around southwest of London. It is in the Borough of Waverley, close to the county border with Hampshire. The town is on the north branch of the River Wey, a tributary of the Thames, and is at the western end of the North Downs. The civil parish, which includes the villages of Badshot Lea, Hale and Wrecclesham, covers and had a population of 39,488 in 2011. Among the prehistoric artefacts from the area is a woolly mammoth tusk, excavated in Badshot Lea at the start of the 21st century. The earliest evidence of human activity is from the Neolithic and, during the Roman period, tile making took place close to the town centre. The name "Farnham" is of Saxon origin and is generally agreed to mean "meadow where ferns grow". The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) was the six-divisions the British Army sent to the Western Front during the First World War. Planning for a British Expeditionary Force began with the 1906–1912 Haldane reforms of the British Army carried out by the Secretary of State for War Richard Haldane following the Second Boer War (1899–1902). The term ''British Expeditionary Force'' is often used to refer only to the forces present in France prior to the end of the First Battle of Ypres on 22 November 1914. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. Raymond Reade
Major General Raymond Northland Revell Reade, ( – 18 October 1943) was a British Army general and Commandant of the Royal Military College of Canada. Background Born in Chelsea, London, he was the son of John Page Reade and his wife Lady Mary Stuart Knox, daughter of Thomas Knox, 2nd Earl of Ranfurly. He was educated at Eton College and went to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Military career Reade was commissioned into the 85th Regiment of Foot on 14 January 1880. He served as Commandant of Royal Military College of Canada from 1901 to 1905. His criticism of poor RMC examination marks in French, physics and chemistry in 1901 and surveying and physics 1904 led to reforms at the college: smaller classes for French, entrance tests in physics and chemistry, and separate instructors for physics and surveying. Major-General Neville John Gordon Cameron (9 October 1873 – 5 December 1955) was a British Army officer who served with distinction in many conflicts throughout his almost forty years of military service, most notably during the First World War, serving successively as a staff officer and a brigade and division commander. Major-General Thomas Stanford Baldock (January 1854 – August 1937) was a British Army officer. Military career Baldock was born Portsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire, in January 1854, the son of William Baldock. Ater being educated at Cheltenham College and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, he was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in April 1873. He was promoted to captain in 1882 and major in 1890 and he graduated from the Staff College, Camberley in 1889. He saw action in the Second Boer War and subsequently commanded a column of Royal Artillery Mounted Rifles in South Africa for which he was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath. He was promoted to colonel on 1 January 1903. Shorncliffe Army Camp
Shorncliffe Army Camp is a large military camp near Cheriton in Kent. Established in 1794, it later served as a staging post for troops destined for the Western Front during the First World War. History The camp was established in 1794 when the British Army bought over 229 acres of land at Shorncliffe; it was then extended in 1796 and 1806. It was at Shorncliffe that in 1803 Sir John Moore trained the Light Division that fought under the Duke of Wellington in the Napoleonic Wars. In 1890 hutted camp facilities were replaced with permanent facilities known as Moore Barracks, Napier Barracks, Ross Barracks, Royal Engineers Barracks (later known as Burgoyne Barracks) and Somerset Barracks. Risborough Barracks were established by 1910.
