Edward P. Hagan
Edward Patrick Hagan (February 1, 1846 New York City – February 20, 1893 New York City) was an American politician from New York. Life He attended the public schools, and graduated from City College of New York. Then he became a saloon keeper, and later engaged in the real estate business. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (New York Co., 16th D.) in 1879, 1880, 1885, 1886, 1887, 1888 and 1889. He was Deputy Street Cleaning Commissioner of New York City in 1890. Laparotomy
A laparotomy is a surgical procedure involving a surgical incision through the abdominal wall to gain access into the abdominal cavity. It is also known as a celiotomy. Origins and history The first successful laparotomy was performed without anesthesia by Ephraim McDowell in 1809 in Danville, Kentucky. On July 13, 1881, George E. Goodfellow treated a miner outside Tombstone, Arizona Territory, who had been shot in the abdomen with a .32-caliber Colt revolver. Goodfellow was able to operate on the man nine days after he was shot, when he performed the first laparotomy to treat a bullet wound. Terminology The term comes from the Greek word λᾰπάρᾱ (lapara) 'the soft part of the body between the ribs and hip, flank' and the suffix ''-tomy'', from the Greek word τομή (tome) '(surgical) cut'.
