Edward M Walsh
Edward M. Walsh (born 1939), is the founding president of the University of Limerick, one of two new universities established by Ireland in 1989. He headed the institution from its inception as the National Institute for Higher Education Limerick, in 1970, when he was appointed as chairman of the planning board, and director, through its transformation to a university in 1989, when he was appointed president, until his retirement in 1998, when he was awarded the title of "Founding President" for life. A native of Cork city, Walsh is a chartered engineer and registered silversmith. Early life Born 1939 in Cork, Ireland, to a butcher and cattle-dealer, he was educated at Christian Brothers College, Cork. He is the close relative and godson of Michael Grimes, first professor of microbiology at University College Cork (UCC). Academic career Early career Walsh graduated from UCC with a B.Eng. in 1961. Shannon Development (legally the ''Shannon Free Airport Development Company Limited'' formerly known as SFADCO) was an important regional development body for the Shannon Region of Ireland. Its area in the lower River Shannon basin comprised all of counties Clare, Limerick, and the former North Tipperary, as well as north Kerry and west Offaly. Its key founder was Brendan O'Regan. Craggaunowen is an archaeological open-air museum in eastern County Clare, Ireland. It is named for the 16th-century castle which is one of its main components. Craggaunowen is located 10 km east of Quin, County Clare. The name Craggaunowen derives from its Irish name ''Creagán Eoghain'' (Owen's little rocky hill). The site is operated by Shannon Heritage. The National Self-Portrait Collection Of Ireland
The National Self-Portrait Collection of Ireland is a collection of more than 400 self-portraits of Irish artists which is housed in the Kneafsey Gallery at the University of Limerick. The origins of the collection can be found in the purchase of fifteen self-portraits from the collection of the late John Kneafsey by the university in 1977. Kneafsey worked as office manager for the '' Irish Independent'' newspaper and was a former Chair of the Limerick Art Society, a patron and collector of art. In 1982 the university appointed a Board of Trustees tasked with establishing and maintaining a national collection which would reflect a broad spectrum of the visual arts across the island.
