Edward Lockyer
Edward Russell Lockyer (25 December 1899 – 5 October 1958) was a Canadian businessman and politician. Lockyer served as a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada. Life and career Lockyer was born in rural Manitoulin Island, Ontario. In 1918, he moved to Toronto and entered the clothing business, but switched industries by 1929, creating a fuel company. He eventually became president of Northern Fuel and Automatic Heating Ltd. He also joined the Bedford Masonic Lodge. Lockyer was elected at the Trinity riding in the March 1958 general election and served for only several months in the 24th Canadian Parliament before he died in Toronto in October 1958, having been stricken with heart disease while viewing a telecast of the fourth game of the 1958 World Series The 1958 World Series was the championship series in Major League Baseball for the 1958 season. Trinity (electoral District)
Trinity was an electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada, 1935 to 1988. It covered a portion of western Toronto, Ontario. Its name comes from the Trinity–Bellwoods area where Trinity College, Toronto was located. History This district was formed in 1933 from portions of Toronto Northwest, Toronto West Centre, and Toronto South ridings. Its boundaries changed repeatedly over the years; when created, it stretched far north to the edge of the city boundaries. As this northern portion became more populated, it was split off into other ridings. Its eastern and western boundaries were fairly consistent, stretching from Bathurst Street in the east to Atlantic Avenue in the West. 24th Canadian Parliament
The 24th Canadian Parliament was in session from May 12, 1958, until April 19, 1962. The membership was set by the 1958 federal election on March 31, 1958, and it changed only somewhat due to resignations and by-elections until it was dissolved prior to the 1962 election. It was controlled by a Progressive Conservative Party majority, which won the largest majority in Canadian history, under Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and the 18th Canadian Ministry. The Official Opposition was the Liberal Party, led by Lester B. Pearson. The Speaker was Roland Michener. The 55th edition of the World Series, it matched the American League champion New York Yankees and the National League champion Milwaukee Braves. 1958 Canadian Federal Election
The 1958 Canadian federal election was held to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 24th Parliament of Canada on March 31, 1958, just nine months after the 23rd election. It transformed Prime Minister John Diefenbaker's minority into the largest majority government in Canadian history and the second largest percentage of the popular vote. Stanley Haidasz
Stanley Haidasz, (March 4, 1923 – August 6, 2009) was a Canadian politician and doctor. Life and career Haidasz was born to Polish parents who immigrated to Canada in 1910 from Stanislawów. He studied medicine graduating from the University of Toronto in 1951, and did post-graduate work in cardiology at the University of Chicago. Haidasz entered politics when he ran in the 1957 election, and became the Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for the Toronto riding of Trinity. He was defeated in the 1958 election in which John Diefenbaker led the Progressive Conservative Party to a landslide victory. Haidasz returned to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1962 election, representing the Toronto riding of Parkdale. He retained his seat through five succeeding elections until 1978 when he became the first Canadian of Polish descent to be appointed to the Senate of Canada. A Masonic lodge, often termed a private lodge or constituent lodge, is the basic organisational unit of Freemasonry. It is also commonly used as a term for a building in which such a unit meets.
