Edward Leonard Caum
Edward Leonard Caum (1893–1952) was a United States botanist known for his work on plant species in Hawaii. In the 1920s, Caum was working with the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association (HSPA), and with the help of W. W. G. Moir of American Factors, the two helped preserve a collection of Native Hawaii sugarcane species, ''S. officinarum''. Caum lived with his wife in the "H" house of the Lyon Arboretum until his death. Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association
Founded in 1895, the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association (HSPA) was an unincorporated, voluntary organization of sugarcane plantation owners in the Hawaiian Islands. Its objective was to promote the mutual benefits of its members and the development of the sugar industry in the islands. It conducted scientific studies and gathered accurate records about the sugar industry. The HSPA practiced paternalistic management. Plantation owners introduced welfare programs, sometimes out of concern for the workers, but often designed to suit their economic ends. Threats, coercion, and "divide and rule" tactics were employed, particularly to keep the plantation workers ethnically segregated. The HSPA also actively campaigned to bring workers to Hawaii. For instance, they opened offices in Manila and Vigan, Ilocos Sur, to recruit Filipino workers and provide them free passage to Hawaii. Lyon Arboretum
The Harold L. Lyon Arboretum is a arboretum and botanical garden managed by the University of Hawaii at Manoa, University of Hawaii at Mānoa located at the upper end of Manoa, Mānoa Valley in Hawaii, Hawaii. Much of the Arboretum's botanical collection consists of an artificial lowland tropical rainforest with numerous trails and small water features. History The Manoa Arboretum was established in 1918 by the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association to demonstrate watershed restoration and test various tree species for reforestation, as well as collect living plants of economic value. The original director of the arboretum was Dr. Harold L. Lyon, a botanist from Minnesota who was plant pathologist for the HSPA. Amaranthus Brownii
''Amaranthus brownii'' was an annual herb in the family Amaranthaceae. The plant was found only on the small island of Nihoa in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, growing on rocky outcrops at altitudes of . It was one of nine species of ''Amaranthus'' in the Hawaiian Islands, as well as the only endemic Hawaiian species of the genus. It is now considered extinct. ''A. brownii'' was first discovered during the Tanager Expedition in 1923 by botanist Edward Leonard Caum. It differed from other Hawaiian species of ''Amaranthus'' with its spineless leaf axils, linear leaves, and indehiscent fruits. It was one of 26 vascular plants on Nihoa, 17 of which are indigenous, six alien, and three endemic only to Nihoa; these latter three included ''A. brownii'', the Nihoa fan palm or ''loulu'', and the Nihoa carnation.
