Edward Jackson (footballer)
Edward "Ted" Jackson (16 March 1925 – 5 February 1996) was an Australian rules football player in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Edwards was one of few league players of Indigenous Australian heritage in the 1940s. At the end of the 1947, "Clubman", the ''Weekly Times'' football correspondent rated ex-Echuca Melbourne player, Eddie Jackson, the best of all of the first-year "former country players" in that year's VFL Competition: the second-best was the ex-Wycheproof Collingwood player, Alex Denney, and the third-best was the ex-Granya Footscray player, Norm Webb. He played in the Melbourne team in the 1948 Grand Final. Echuca Football Club
The Echuca Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Murray Bombers'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the Victorian town of Echuca, Victoria (Australia), Victoria. History The Echuca Football Club was formed in 1874, so it could play against the Rochester Football Club which was also formed in 1874 too. Echuca initially wore the blue and white colours. In 1890, Echuca won the Aitken Tropy, then 1891, Echuca East Football Club won the trophy, then in 1892, Rochester won the initial premiership and Echuca protested, which resulted in the two teams having to play a grand final match. Rochester refused to play, with Echuca travelling over to Rochester to play, but with no competing team, Echuca claimed the premiership match, after the first bounce. AFL Grand Final
The AFL Grand Final is an Australian rules football match to determine the premiers for the Australian Football League (AFL) season. From its inception until 1989, it was known as the VFL Grand Final, as the league at that time was the Victorian Football League. Played at the end of the finals series, the game has been held annually since 1898, except in 1924. It is traditionally staged on the afternoon of the last Saturday in September, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The game has spawned a number of traditions and activities, which have grown in popularity nationally since the interstate expansion of the Victorian Football League to become the Australian Football League in the 1980s and 1990s. Norman Arthur "Bunny" Webb (18 May 1921 – 16 June 1996) was a former Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Webb was originally from the Granya Football Club and played in their 1939 losing grand final side and shared the 1940 Mitta Valley Football Association best and fairest award with W Hodgkin from Mitta Valley. Webb joined the Army in 1943 and at some stage between 1943 and 1945, Webb played with South Sydney Football Club. He was recruited to Footscray after playing in Granya's 1946 Tallangatta & District Football League premiership and winning the club best and fairest award too. Webb managed to play 15 consecutive senior games in his first VFL season (1947) after debuting in round five. Alex Denney
Alexander David Denney (24 June 1926 – 26 April 2004) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Powley Denney (1893–1964), and Nellie Violet Denney (1894–1947), née Glover, Alexander David Denney was born in Wycheproof, Victoria on 24 June 1926. In 1949 he married Betty Lois Coventry, the daughter of Gordon Coventry. Education He was educated at Wycheproof State School (No.1757), and then, having won a major residential scholarship, he attended Caulfield Grammar School, as a boarder, from 1939 to 1942, where he distinguished himself not only as a student — he was dux of his class in 1939 — but also as a footballer, and as a cricketer, and, especially, an outstanding athlete. At the school's October 1942 Annual Sports, Denney won the Open 100 yards, 220 yards, and 440 yards races, the 120 yards hurdles, and the long jump.
