Edward Ikem Okeke
Edward Ikem Okeke (August 1, 1942 in British Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria – July 2, 1995 in Anambra State, Federal Republic of Nigeria) was a Soviet educated, left wing Nigerian politician, academic, and trade union leader. He served as Deputy President of the Nigerian People's Redemption Party during the Nigerian second republic and as a member of the governing board for the University of Sokoto, now Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. After Dr. Okeke and S.G Ikoku defected to the NPN, Dr. Okeke served as Special Advisor to President Shehu Shagari, and as Chairman of the Nigerian Presidential Taskforce on Rice. Okeke was born to Sir Edward Ikem Okeke of Nnewi, a powerful landed gentry from Nnewi in southeastern Nigeria and kinsman to Sir Louis Phillippe Odumegwu (father to Ojukwu Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who was President of the short lived Republic of Biafia). The history of Nigeria can be traced to the earliest inhabitants whose remains date from at least 13,000 BC through early civilizations such as the Nok culture which began around 1500 BC. Landed Gentry
The landed gentry, or the ''gentry'', is a largely historical British social class of landowners who could live entirely from rental income, or at least had a country estate. While distinct from, and socially below, the British peerage, their economic base in land was often similar, and some of the landed gentry were wealthier than some peers. Nigerian Second Republic
The Second Nigerian Republic was a brief formation of the Nigerian state which succeeded the military governments formed after the overthrow of the first republic. Background Contested elections and political turbulence in the Western region ended Nigeria's First republic in 1966 with the overthrow of the government by majors of the Nigerian army. A unitary style of government was subsequently decreed into law. After a counter-coup six months later, the country was drawn into a civil war between federal forces and Biafran forces (Eastern region). Just before the war, 12 new states were created from the four regions.
