Edward Haliburton
Edward Douglas Haliburton (March 28, 1898 – March 12, 1990) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral districts of Kings County and Kings South in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1953 to 1970. He was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia. Born in 1898 at St. John's, Newfoundland, Haliburton was educated at Dalhousie University, and University of King's College. He married Louella Jean Tattrie in March 1926. By career, Haliburton was a farmer, fruit grower, and journalist. Haliburton first attempted to enter provincial politics in the 1949 election, but was defeated by 184 votes. He ran again in the 1953 election, and was elected in the dual-member riding of Kings County with Progressive Conservative George Arthur Boggs. Colony Of Newfoundland
Newfoundland Colony was an English overseas possessions, English and, later, British Empire, British colony established in 1610 on the Newfoundland (island), island of Newfoundland off the Atlantic coast of Canada, in what is now the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. That followed decades of sporadic English settlement on the island, which was at first seasonal, rather than permanent. It was made a Crown colony in 1824 and a Dominion of Newfoundland, Dominion in 1907. Its economy collapsed during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and Newfoundland relinquished its dominion status, effectively becoming once again a colony governed by appointees from the Colonial Office in Whitehall in London. 1956 Nova Scotia General Election
The 1956 Nova Scotia general election was held on 30 October 1956 to elect members of the 46th House of Assembly of the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It was won by the Progressive Conservatives led by Robert Stanfield. This was the first election the Liberals had fought after the death of their longtime charismatic leader, Angus L. Macdonald. Public Health Minister Harold Connolly became interim leader and premier following Macdonald's death in 1954, but was defeated at a leadership convention by Education Minister Henry Hicks. The convention exposed a sharp religious divide in the Liberal Party; Hicks was a Protestant and Connolly was a Catholic. George Isaac Smith
George Isaac Smith MBE (April 6, 1909 – December 19, 1982) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the 18th premier of Nova Scotia from 1967 to 1970. He was a Canadian senator from 1975 until his death. G.I. Smith is noted for having recruited Robert Stanfield to help rebuild and lead the Progressive Conservatives in Nova Scotia. While Premier he brought Michelin Tire, still Nova Scotia's biggest employer, to the province. He established the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, had the government take over Sydney Steel Corporation when tts corporate owners closed it down, thus preserving 3,000 jobs. His government established the affordable housing community of Lower Sackville. Earlier in his Ministerial years, as Highways Minister (1956–62) he built the Bicentennial Highway and paved a great many miles of roads throughout the province.
