Edward Flore
Edward Frank Flore (December 5, 1877 – September 27, 1945) was an American labor unionist. Born in Buffalo, New York, Flore worked in the saloon owned by his father from his teenage years. In 1900, he joined the Hotel and Restaurant Employees' International Alliance, holding various positions in his local, before in 1905 becoming vice-president of the international union. In 1909, he contested the presidency of the union, but lost and became a bartender once more. However, in 1911, he again stood for the presidency, this time successfully. When Flore was elected president, he was only the second most powerful figure in the union, behind secretary-treasurer Jere L. Sullivan. However, Flore became increasingly unhappy with Sullivan's focus on organizing bartenders at the expense of other areas of the industry. In 1927, he formed a faction to challenge Sullivan. The Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE) was a United States labor union representing workers of the hospitality industry, formed in 1890. In 2004, HERE merged with the Union of Needletrades, Industrial, and Textile Employees (UNITE) to form UNITE HERE. HERE notably organized the staff of Yale University in 1984. Other major employers that contracted with this union included Harrah's, Caesars Palace, Wynn Resorts, Hilton Hotels, Hyatt, and Walt Disney World. HERE was affiliated with the AFL–CIO. American Federation Of Labor
The American Federation of Labor (A.F. of L.) was a national federation of labor unions in the United States that continues today as the AFL-CIO. It was founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 1886 by an alliance of craft unions eager to provide mutual support and disappointed in the Knights of Labor. Samuel Gompers was elected the full-time president at its founding convention and reelected every year, except one, until his death in 1924. He became the major spokesperson for the union movement. The A.F. of L. was the largest union grouping, even after the creation of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) by unions that were expelled by the A.F. of L. in 1935. Hugo Ernst
Hugo Ernst (December 11, 1876 – July 22, 1954) was a Croatian-born American labor union leader. Born in Varaždin in Croatia, Ernst's father was the city's rabbi. Hugo studied journalism, and when he was 26, emigrated to New York City to become a reporter on a Croatian-language newspaper. When he asked for a pay rise, he was instead sacked, and became a bus boy. In 1904, he traveled to St Louis, to work as a waiter at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. After the event, he moved to San Francisco, around which time, he joined local 30 of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees' International Alliance. Ernst later became secretary of the local, which organized low-paid workers, and he became the leader of opposition to Jere L. Sullivan's craft unionism. Dennis Lane
Dennis Lane (1881 – August 10, 1942) was an American labor union leader. Born in Chicago, Lane worked in the stockyards from an early age. He joined the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America's Local 87, for cattle butchers. He took part in the major strike of 1904, as a result of which, he was sacked and blacklisted. He found work in other occupations for a few years, before coming to work as full-time organizer for the Meat Cutters. In 1914, Lane was elected as vice-president of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters, and then in 1917, to the top position of secretary-treasurer. He led major organizing drives, which were successful during World War I, but foundered during the post-war depression. He led the union in a major strike in 1921, which was largely a failure.
