The Courtneys Of Curzon Street
''The Courtneys of Curzon Street'' (also titled ''The Courtney Affair'' or Kathy's Love Affair, in the U.S.) is a 1947 British drama film starring Anna Neagle and Michael Wilding. It is a study of class division and snobbery in Britain in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The film is one of the most seen British films of all time, with 15.9 million tickets sold at the cinema. Plot Edward Courtney, the son of a baronet shocks class-conscious 1900 British society by marrying Kate, his Irish servant. The film chronicles 45 years in their lives together and apart, through the Boer War and World War I and World War II. The family live on Curzon Street, a high class street in the Mayfair district of London. Edward Courtney (classicist)
Edward Courtney () was a Northern Irish classicist. After reading Classics at Trinity College Dublin, he taught Latin literature at King's College London until 1983. He then worked in the United States and held the Basil L. Gildersleeve Professorship at the University of Virginia when he retired. He specialised in textual criticism, publishing critical editions of Valerius Flaccus, Juvenal, Statius, and Petronius. Life and career Edward Courtney was born on 22 March 1932 in Belfast. His parents were George Courtney, who worked as a legal administrator, and his wife Kathleen. From 1946, he was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, where, encouraged by his teachers H. C. Fay and John Cowser, he began to develop an interest in Latin literature. In 1950, he began studying Classics as a scholar at Trinity College Dublin. He graduated in 1954 and was awarded the Gold Medal in Classics for his results. The Oath of Allegiance of 1606 was an oath requiring English Catholics to swear allegiance to James I over the Pope. It was adopted by Parliament the year after the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 (see Popish Recusants Act 1605). The oath was proclaimed law on 22 June 1606; it was also called the ''Oath of Obedience'' ( la, juramentum fidelitatis). Tedda Courtney
Ed "Tedda" Courtney (1885–1957) was a pioneer Australian rugby league footballer and coach. He played club football for North Sydney, Western Suburbs and representative football for the New South Wales state and Australian national sides. He is considered one of the nation's finest footballers of the 20th century. Born in Townsville, Courtney was one of six brothers who all played for North Sydney. His brothers Raymond and Robert died in World War I. He was a wharfie throughout his working life and was renowned for his fearless tackling style and ability to harass the opposition with his defence.
