Edward Cooper (West Virginia Politician)
Edward Cooper (February 26, 1873 – March 1, 1928) was a lawyer and Republican politician who represented West Virginia in the United States House of Representatives during the 64th and 65th United States Congresses from 1915 to 1919. Cooper was born in Trevorton, Pennsylvania. He moved with his parents to Fayette County, West Virginia in 1875 where he attended public and private schools. He graduated from Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia in 1892, and subsequently from the law department of the same university. He was admitted to the bar in 1894 and practiced law for three years in Bramwell, West Virginia where he was also a member of the town council for eight years. On the death of his father, Cooper abandoned the practice of law and engaged in the development of coal properties in West Virginia. Edward Cooper (October 26, 1824 – February 25, 1905) was the 83rd Mayor of New York City from 1879 to 1880 and the second president of the Cooper Union. He was the only surviving son of industrialist Peter Cooper. Early life Cooper was born in New York City on October 26, 1824. He was the son of Peter Cooper (1791–1883) and Sarah Raynor (née Bedell) Cooper (1793–1869). His sister Amelia Cooper (1830–1912) was married to Abram Stevens Hewitt (1822–1903), who also served as mayor of New York from 1887 to 1888. He was the grandson of John O. Cooper (1755–1838), a hatmaker who served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and Margaret Campbell (1762–1841). He attended the New York public schools and Columbia College, afterwards entering the iron business with the aid of his father. Major Edward Cooper VC (4 May 1896 – 19 August 1985) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. The ''Edward Cooper'' was a 19th-century Sandy Hook pilot boat, built in 1879 for New York Pilots at Greenpoint, Brooklyn. She was named in honor of the Mayor of New York City. The ''Edward Cooper'' helped transport New York City maritime pilots between inbound or outbound ships coming into the New York Harbor. She survived the Great Blizzard of 1888. In 1892, the ''Cooper'' sank in a snowstorm and was replaced by the ''Joseph Pulitzer'' in 1894. Construction and service On April 8, 1879, the ''Edward Cooper,'' was launched from the Samuel Pine shipyard in Greenpoint, Brooklyn at the foot of Kent Street. Edward Elder Cooper was a prominent early black publisher in the United States. He was born into slavery in Duval County, Florida on 10. June 1859, and died at the age of 49 on 9 July 1908. Marvin Cooper (born c. 1943) is a former dancer who performed under the stage name Dancing Harry at professional basketball games. He danced on the sidelines during timeouts and gave whammies to the opposing team. Cooper performed in both the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the American Basketball Association (ABA) with the Baltimore Bullets, New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets and the Indiana Pacers. Early years Cooper played basketball in high school at Mount Saint Joseph in Baltimore. In the locker room, he performed impersonations of Elvis Presley. Edward Synge Cooper (5 March 1762 – 16 August 1830) was an Irish landowner and politician from County Sligo. He sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1806 to 1830. Cooper was the second son of Joshua Cooper (1732–1800), Joshua Cooper MP (1732–1800) of Markree Castle, and his wife Alicia, daughter of Edward Synge (bishop of Elphin), Edward Synge, Bishop of Elphin. He was educated by Rev. Richard Norris in Drogheda, and then at Trinity College Dublin. In 1801 he married Anne Verelst, daughter of Bengal Governor Harry Verelst (colonial governor), Harry Verelst of Aston Hall, Yorkshire. They had three sons. Edward Joshua Cooper (May 1798 – 23 April 1863) was an Irish landowner, politician and astronomer from Markree Castle in County Sligo. He sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1830 to 1841 and from 1857 to 1859, but is best known for his astronomy, and as the creator of Markree Observatory. His observatory was home to the largest refracting (telescope with a lens) of the 1830s (an almost 14 inch astronomical grade Cauchoix of Paris lens, the largest in the World), and the asteroid 9 Metis was discovered there in the 1840s by his assistant. Several astronomical catalogs were also produced in the 19th century there. Major-General Edward Joshua Cooper (21 April 1858 – 8 March 1945) was a senior British Army officer. Military career Educated at Marlborough College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Cooper was commissioned into the 99th (Lanarkshire) Regiment of Foot on 11 September 1876. He saw action during the Relief of Ladysmith in 1900 in the Second Boer War and the British expedition to Tibet in 1904. He went on to be commander of the troops in North China in 1910, commander of the 46th Brigade in around August 1915 and then commander of the 13th Brigade in December 1914 during the First World War. Edward Henry Cooper
Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Henry Cooper (1827 – 26 February 1902) was an Irish officer in the British Army, a landlord in County Sligo, and a Conservative politician. At the age of 36 the Dublin-born soldier inherited Markree Castle in County Sligo from his uncle, and left the army to manage his country estate. As one of the major landlords in the county, he assumed many of the roles which still accompanied that status. He promptly became a local magistrate, and in 1865 was returned unopposed by the county to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Having followed five previous Cooper landlords of Markree to serve as Member of Parliament (MP) for Sligo, his unpopularity as a landlord led to his defeat in 1868, after one term. He then reactivated his uncle's Markree Observatory, and commissioned archaeological drawings of County Sligo.
