Edward Colman or Coleman (17 May 1636 – 3 December 1678) was an English Catholic courtier under Charles II of England. Life He was born at Brent Eleigh, Suffolk, son of the local vicar Thomas Colman and his wife Margaret Wilson; he was a cousin of the Salisbury MP, Richard Colman, who died in 1672, and through Richard's wife Anne Hyde a distant connection of Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, receiving an MA in 1659. Colman, who had been reared as a strict Puritan, converted to Roman Catholicism in the early 1660s. Edward Coleman (gangster)
Edward Coleman (died January 12, 1839) was the founder of the Forty Thieves, alleged to be the oldest criminal gang in New York City and the first Irish gang with an established leader. He became one of New York City's most notorious villains, for the murder of his wife and popular Five Points character known as " The Pretty Hot Corn Girl". An early New York gangster, Coleman was the original leader of the Forty Thieves, helping form the gang in 1826. Coleman continued to control the Five Points with the gang for over fifteen years before courting and eventually marrying a "Hot Corn Girl" named Ann in 1838. As her husband, Coleman was entitled to her earnings; however, when she did not earn as much as expected, Coleman beat her so severely she later died from her wounds. Coleman was quickly arrested and convicted of murder in early January 1839, and on January 12, 1839, Coleman became the first man to be hanged at the newly constructed Tombs Prison (built in 1838). Edward Coleman (miner)
Edward Coleman (1830–1913) was an American mine manager, president, and superintendent during the California gold rush in Nevada County. He also served as President of the Board of School Trustees in Grass Valley; and Vice President of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad. His brother, John C. Coleman, was the railroad's first president; John was also president of the North Star Mine. Early years Coleman was born August 28, 1830, in Walton, Suffolk, and he attended school in England. He left England with his parents in May, 1846, for Canada. He lived in Montreal for a year, and then went to Toronto, where he remained until the spring of 1852, before moving to New York City. Career Edward and his brother John left for California in the spring of 1853, arriving a few miles north of Marysville in October. Edward Coleman (1766–1839) was an English veterinary surgeon. He trained as a surgeon, but was appointed head of the London Veterinary College in its early years. Biography He was born in 1766 at Burmarsh, near Dymchurch, Kent, a son of Edward Coleman and Sarah West. His father was the Expenditor (Treasurer) of the Corporation of Romney Marsh. Edward Coleman (the younger) was apprenticed to Dr Kite at Gravesend and, in 1789, went to London to the Borough School of Medicine residing in the family of Henry Cline F. R. S., surgeon to Guy's Hospital. During his training Coleman studied asphyxia and gained a prize for an essay on Resuscitation awarded by the Humane Society, published in 1791. In that year he started practising as a surgeon in London.
