Edward A. Rath County Office Building
The Edward A. Rath County Office Building is a high-rise(16-story) office building located at 95 Franklin Street, in Buffalo, New York, across from Erie County Hall and the Prudential (Guaranty) Building. The Rath building was named for Edward A. Rath, the first County Executive of Erie County. The building contains the Erie County Executive’s office, Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Public Works, the Office of Geographic Information Services, and a number of other county departments. It was designed by architectural firms Milstein, Wittek, Davis & Hamilton and Backus, Crane & Love, and constructed c. 1968. Milstein, Wittek, Davis & Hamilton
Milton Milstein (May 17, 1910 – May 9, 1993) was an American architect in practice in Buffalo, New York from 1947 until his retirement in 1991. Milstein was a leader in the architectural and Jewish communities of western New York and was credited by his contemporaries with raising the standard of architectural design in the Buffalo area. Life and career Milton Milstein was born May 17, 1910, in New York City to Samuel Milstein and Rebecca Milstein, née Zimmerman. He was educated at Syracuse University, graduating in 1933 with a BArch, followed by a year of post-graduate study. He was offered a teaching position in the university but declined in order to pursue a career in practice. He first worked for Syracuse architects D. Kenneth Sargent and Paul Hueber before moving to Buffalo in 1940, where he worked for several architects before joining the office of James William Kideney after World War II. Erie County is a county along the shore of Lake Erie in western New York State. As of the 2020 census, the population was 954,236. The county seat is Buffalo, which makes up about 28% of the county's population. Prudential (Guaranty) Building
The Guaranty Building, formerly called the Prudential Building, is an early skyscraper in Buffalo, New York. It was designed by Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler and completed in 1896. The building has been declared a National Historic Landmark and is located within the Joseph Ellicott Historic District. Building context The building was the brainchild of a Buffalonian businessman and entrepreneur Hascal T. Taylor. He planned to construct a speculative office building called "The Taylor Building" in the developing downtown district. The site Taylor chose was strategically located adjacent to the then County and City Municipal building and near a number of institutional structures.
