Vesterålen
Vesterålen is a district and archipelago in Nordland county, Norway. It is located just north of Lofoten and west of Harstad. It is the northernmost part of Nordland county. Sortland is the largest town, situated near the center of the archipelago. Vesterålen includes the municipalities of Andøy, Bø, Hadsel, Sortland, and Øksnes. Name The Old Norse forms of the name were ' and ' (plural). The first element is ' which means "west" and the last element is ' which means "(deep and narrow) sound" or "strait". Erling Welle-Strand
Erling Welle-Strand (25 October 1916 – 24 May 2013) was a Norwegian writer and resistance member. Early life He was born in Bergen as a son of novelist and journalist Edvard Welle-Strand (1884–1964) and teacher Elsa Kielland, née Lindhé (1888–1979). Erling's father was a sub-editor in a local newspaper, ''Bergens Aftenblad'', and was also known to some as an anti-Semitic writer. Himself, Erling Welle-Strand belonged to the "radical wing of the Labour Party" before World War II. He grew up in Bergen and finished his secondary education at Bergen Cathedral School in 1935. He worked briefly as a press secretary for the theatre Den Nationale Scene before studying at the University of Oslo. Knut Hamsun
Knut Hamsun (4 August 1859 – 19 February 1952) was a Norwegian writer who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. Hamsun's work spans more than 70 years and shows variation with regard to consciousness, subject, perspective and environment. Erik Welle-Strand
Erik August Lindhè Welle-Strand (2 June 1915 – 17 July 2001) was a Norwegian mining engineer and resistance member during World War II. He is best known as leader of the illegal radio post Skylark B. Early life He was born in June 1915 in Bergen. He was a brother of Erling Welle-Strand. As a teenager he was active in the theater (Den Nationale Scene), prior to beginning his compulsory military service in 1935. He also worked briefly as a coal miner for Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani, before enrolling at the Norwegian Institute of Technology in 1936. World War II He returned to Bergen in January 1940, stationed at an anti-air battery to guard the Norwegian neutrality in World War II. However, on 9 April Nazi Germany invaded Norway. Edvard Hoem
Edvard Hoem (born 10 March 1949) is a Norwegian novelist, dramatist, lyricist, psalmist and government scholar. He made his literary debut in 1969, with the poetry collection ''Som grønne musikantar''. He was awarded the Norwegian Critics Prize for Literature in 1974 for the novel ''Kjærleikens ferjereiser''. He was awarded the Melsom Prize in 2006, and the ''Peter Dass Prize'' in 2007 for the novel ''Mors og fars historie''. He received the ''Ibsen Prize'' in 2008 for the play ''Mikal Hetles siste ord''. Several of his books (''Kjærleikens ferjereiser'' (1974), ''Prøvetid'' (1984), ''Ave Eva'' (1987), ''Mors og fars historie'' (2005)) have been nominated for the Nordic Council's Literature Prize, but did not win this award.
