Eduardo Serra (admiral)
Vice Admiral Eduardo Serra is an Italian naval officer. He attended the Francesco Morosini Naval Military School in Venice from 1973 to 1976 before attending the Italian Naval Academy from 1976 to 1980. He was appointed Commander Maritime Command South on 6 November 2015 with a promotion to vice admiral in 2017, a position he held until October 2017. On 27 October 2017 he was appointed Commander of Logistics Command. Maestrale-class Frigate
The ''Maestrale'' class is a class of frigates of the Italian Navy. The class is composed of eight vessels, all of which were built by Fincantieri S.p.A., Riva Trigoso, except for ''Grecale'', which was built by Fincantieri S.p.A. – Muggiano, La Spezia. The ''Maestrale''-class frigates were primarily designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), however the ships are highly flexible so they are also capable of anti-air and anti-surface operations. Ships of this class have been widely used in various international missions, either under NATO or UN flag, and during normal operations of the Italian Navy. The first of these ships entered in service in early 1982. The rest of the fleet was launched over the next three years. Durand De La Penne-class Destroyer
The ''Durand de la Penne'' class are two guided-missile destroyers operated by the Italian Navy. The design is an enlarged version of the , updated with diesel and gas turbine CODOG machinery and modern sensors. Four ships were planned but the second pair were cancelled when Italy joined the Horizon project. Origins This class is named after a famous naval diver who served in Italy's Royal Navy during World War II, Luigi Durand de la Penne. He, together with other members of X MAS made the most successful human torpedo mission, damaging the British battleships and in Alexandria, December 1941, with SLCs 'Maiale'. These new ships were meant as very advanced destroyers, with an improvement over the previous types in almost every aspect of design. The Francesco Morosini Naval Military School ( it, Scuola militare navale "Francesco Morosini") is a military education college based in Venice operated by the Italian Navy and named after the great venetian Doge. The Italian Naval Academy (Italian: ''Accademia Navale'') is a coeducational military university in Livorno, which is responsible for the technical training of military officers of the Italian Navy. History The Hospitals The Hospital of St. James The Naval Academy stands on the former site of the Hospital of St. James, built in the 1640s for the quarantine of ships' crews from the Levant, which were previously diverted to the islands of Giglio and Elba. The Hospital of St. Leopold The Hospital of St. Leopold was designed by Ignatius Fazzi and built a little further south in 1773, by order of Leopold II. It was equipped with several towers, one of which served to guard the coast, two chapels and two cemeteries. It remained an active hospital until 1846.
