Edna Sirius Lorence
Edna Sirius Roper (; 21 July 1913 – 8 October 1986) was an Australian politician. She was born in Alberton, South Australia, to sea captain Martin Lorence and Hilda Rose, ''née'' Arnold. She attended St Paul's Church of England School in Port Adelaide before working in her father's business. After moving to Victoria, she held various jobs including waitress, copyholder, shop assistant and jewellery maker. On 2 April 1932 she married Gilbert Roper, a linotype operator. In 1941, now living in Sydney, she joined the Labor Party and served as honorary secretary of the NSW Labor Women's Central Organising Committee (1949–57); she was also active in the East Sydney federal electorate council and was a member of the party's central executive from 1952 to 1958. In 1953 she was the first woman to be appointed to the board of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and in 1961 of the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital. Anne Elizabeth Press, ''née'' Speechley (25 August 1903 – 23 August 1992) was an Australian politician. She was born at Dubbo to farmers Thomas and Charlotte Speechley. She was educated privately before training at Sydney Teachers College, thereafter teaching at Condobolin (1922–23), Tichborne (1923–24) and Forbes (1924–25). On 1 September 1924 she married Thomas F. Press, a farmer, with whom she had three children. She was on the council of the New South Wales Parents and Citizens Federation from 1950 to 1953 and vice-president from 1953 to 1960, and was director of the Condobolin Hospital Board from 1953 to 1978. In 1959, Press was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council as a member of the Labor Party. However, she opposed the Labor policy of abolishing the Legislative Council, and together with a number of other Labor MLCs was expelled from the party shortly after her election; these members formed the Independent Labor Group. Leura (postcode: 2780) is a suburb in the City of Blue Mountains local government area that is located west of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. It is one of the series of small towns stretched along the Main Western railway line and Great Western Highway that bisects the Blue Mountains National Park. Leura is situated adjacent to Katoomba, the largest centre in the upper mountains, and the two towns merge along Leura's western edge. The New South Wales Legislative Council, often referred to as the upper house, is one of the two chambers of the parliament of the Australian state of New South Wales. The other is the Legislative Assembly. Both sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. It is normal for legislation to be first deliberated on and passed by the Legislative Assembly before being considered by the Legislative Council, which acts in the main as a house of review. The Legislative Council has 42 members, elected by proportional representation in which the whole state is a single electorate. Members serve eight-year terms, which are staggered, with half the Council being elected every four years, roughly coinciding with elections to the Legislative Assembly. Alberton, South Australia
Alberton is a metropolitan suburb in the west of Adelaide, South Australia, about 20 minutes drive from the city. Part of the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, it is bordered by the suburbs of Rosewater, Queenstown, Cheltenham and Port Adelaide. History Alberton, like Port Adelaide, is rich in historical significance. On 7 March 1839, the South Australian Company was granted private subdivision of preliminary section 423. Section 423 was sold as 'The Town of Albert' and subsequently became 'Albert Town' after Prince Albert, Prince Consort of Queen Victoria. Eventually, 'Alberton' became commonly used and around the turn of the century was officially adopted as the suburb's name.
