Edna Sarah Cole
Edna Sarah Cole (January 1, 1855 – November 23, 1950) was an American Presbyterian missionary who worked in Siam (Thailand) from the late 19th through early 20th centuries. She was principal of the Wang Lang Girls' School in Bangkok, the precursor to Wattana Wittaya Girls Academy. Margaret Landon consulted Cole's letters home to her sister in the United States in her research for writing '' Anna and the King of Siam''. Early life Cole was born in Trenton, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph S. Cole and Sarah Fairbanks Cole. She trained as a teacher in St. Louis, and attended the Western Female Seminary in Oxford, Ohio. Career Cole became a Presbyterian missionary under the auspices of the Board of Foreign Missions in 1875, and sailed for southeast Asia that year. She was principal of girls' school at the Chiang Mai Mission Station from 1878 to 1883. Wattana Wittaya Academy
Wattana Wittaya Academy (W.W.A; th, โรงเรียนวัฒนาวิทยาลัย; ) is Thailand's first boarding school for girls. It was established in 1878 at the palace of the Third King of the Chakri Dynasty. The original name was Kullasatri Wanglang. It is located in Wattana, Bangkok. History Wattana Wittaya Academy is under the Foundation of the Church of Christ in Thailand. It was founded in A.D. 1874 by the American Presbyterian Mission and was originally named "Kullasatri Wanglang". Located in the Royal Palace which is now within the compound of Siriraj Hospital. It was the first boarding school for girls and the first kindergarten of Thailand. Mrs. Harriet M. House was the first principal. Siam Society
The Siam Society Under Royal Patronage ( th, สยามสมาคมในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์) was established in 1904 with a mission to promote knowledge of the culture, history, arts, and natural sciences of Thailand as well as those of neighbouring countries. The premises of the Society in Bangkok, Thailand on Asok Montri Road include a library with many rare books and the Kamthieng House Museum in a historic teak house.
