Edmund Cotter
Edmund McCarthny (Ed) Cotter (15 January 1927 – 19 October 2017) was a New Zealand mountaineer who made several first ascents on the West Coast of New Zealand and was part of the team that first climbed the Maximilian Ridge on Mount Elie de Beaumont in 1951. Cotter was a member of the 1951 New Zealand expedition to the Garhwal Himalaya, with Edmund Hillary, George Lowe (mountaineer), George Lowe and Earle Riddiford. Mount Elie de Beaumont is a high mountain in the Southern Alps on the South Island of New Zealand and the northernmost Three-thousander of the country. Edmund Hillary
Sir Edmund Percival Hillary (20 July 1919 – 11 January 2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. From 1985 to 1988 he served as New Zealand's High Commissioner to India and Bangladesh and concurrently as Ambassador to Nepal. Hillary became interested in mountaineering while in secondary school. He made his first major climb in 1939, reaching the summit of Mount Ollivier. He served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a navigator during World War II and was wounded in an accident. Prior to the Everest expedition, Hillary had been part of the British reconnaissance expedition to the mountain in 1951 as well as an unsuccessful attempt to climb Cho Oyu in 1952. George Lowe (mountaineer)
Wallace George Lowe (15 January 1924 – 20 March 2013), known as George Lowe, was a New Zealand-born mountaineer, explorer, film director and educator. He was the last surviving member of the 1953 British Mount Everest Expedition, during which his friend Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first known people to summit the world's highest peak. Sir Edmund was his fellow Briton and served as his mentor. Early life and expeditions Born in Hastings, New Zealand, into a farming family, George Lowe was educated at Hastings High School and Wellington Teachers College before starting work as a teacher. He spent holidays climbing in the Southern Alps, where he met fellow-New Zealander Edmund Hillary. In 1951, along with Hillary, Lowe was a member of the first New Zealand expedition to the Himalayas. Earle Riddiford
Harold Earle Riddiford (13 October 1921 – 26 June 1989) was a New Zealand mountaineer, lawyer and farmer who went on three mountaineering expeditions to the Himalayas in the 1950s; the first New Zealand expedition to the Garhwal Himalaya in 1951, the 1951 British Mount Everest reconnaissance expedition, and the disastrous 1952 British Cho Oyu expedition. Two New Zealanders from the four on the Garhwal Himalaya expedition were invited to join the 1951 British expedition; Ed Cotter declined, but Riddiford and George Lowe argued about who should go. The two had to pay their own way but Lowe was broke, so Riddiford and Edmund Hillary (who had money from working on a South Island hydroelectric project) joined. The leader of the 1952 British Cho Oyu expedition was Eric Shipton, who was disorganised and left the ordering of supplies to Riddiford.
