Edmonson County is a county located in the south central portion of the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,126. Its county seat is Brownsville. The county was formed in 1825 and named for Captain John "Jack" Edmonson (1764–1813), who was killed at the Battle of Frenchtown during the War of 1812. This is a dry county where the sale of alcohol is prohibited. Edmonson County is included in the Bowling Green, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. Chalybeate, Kentucky
Chalybeate, also known as Chalybeate Springs, is an unincorporated community in Edmonson County, Kentucky, United States, near the Warren County line. History At the turn of the 20th century, the location of the springs, which contained iron salts known as chalybeate, long thought to be health-restoring, was a popular resort. All that remained of the resort by 2010 was an old spring house for the resort, which was initially closed during the Second World War. Edmonson County High School
Edmonson County High School is a four year high school located in Brownsville, Kentucky, United States. It is the only high school serving the Edmonson County School system. History The school was established in 1959 following the consolidation of all the rural high schools throughout Edmonson County. The original location was at 191 West Center Street, which was home of the Edmonson County Middle School from 1981 until summer 2004, and is now the current location of the Edmonson County Fifth/Sixth Grade Center since 2004. The current Edmonson County High School was completed in 1981. In the early 2000s, the decision was made to expand the high school facility and to construct a new Middle School next to the high school. Asphalt is an unincorporated community located in Edmonson County, Kentucky, United States. Geography Asphalt is located about west of Brownsville, the county seat of Edmonson County. In terms of transportation, it is served by Kentucky Route 655 (Segal Road) off of KY 70. The community is southwest of KY 655's intersection with KY 70 at Windyville. Sites of interest The Mathias Willis Store House is located near Asphalt at the end of Salvage Road (formerly Cummins Road). It was a mid-19th century store building that served customers traveling along the Green River, which flows just south of the community. In 1987, the store house was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Kyrock, Kentucky
Kyrock is a ghost town in Edmonson County in south central Kentucky. The ghost town is located about east of Sweeden, or about north-northeast of the county seat of Brownsville. It was once a referred to as a “company town” along the Nolin River during much of the first half of the 20th century, but the industrial town was disincorporated in 1966, about nine years after the closure of the company that created the town. Kyrock was one of several other central Edmonson County communities located near Mammoth Cave National Park. Sunfish is an unincorporated community located in the northwest corner of Edmonson County, Kentucky, United States, near the Grayson County line. It is approximately north-northeast of Bowling Green. Sunfish is part of the Bowling Green Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The Sunfish community is named for Sunfish Creek, a secondary tributary of the Green River which joins Bear Creek to drain the watershed of West-Central Edmonson County. The community was established prior to the 1825 formation of Edmonson County in the section of Edmonson which was originally part of Grayson County.
