Edmond Naïm
Edmond Wadih Naim (; 1918 - January 23, 2006) was a Lebanese politician, jurist and governor of the Banque du Liban. Biography Early life and education Edmond Naïm was born to a Maronite Catholic family in the town of Chiyah in the Greater Beirut region in the year 1918. He studied at the Jesuit Fathers' School and had a bachelor's degree in Law from the French Law School in Beirut. In 1941 and received a PhD in law from Saint Joseph University in Beirut. Career Naim was a member of the Progressive Socialist Party between 1951 and 1963. He participated in the parliamentary elections in 1957 and 1960 but without success. He held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Law of the Lebanese University in 1961 and was then President of the university in 1970 until 1976. In January 1985, he was elected Governor of Lebanon's Central bank, Banque du Liban. Banque Du Liban
Banque du Liban (BdL, ar, مصرف لبنان, English: Bank of Lebanon) is the central bank of Lebanon. It was established on August 1, 1963, and became fully operational on April 1, 1964. It is currently headed by Riad Salameh. One of the main responsibilities of the bank is issuing Lebanon's currency, the Lebanese Pound. Other responsibilities include maintaining monetary stability, regulation of money transfers, and maintaining the soundness of the banking sector. Banking is a very important part of Lebanon's economy with over 100 different banks, which makes the role of BdL particularly important. It currently owns 99.37% of the shares of Lebanon's national carrier, Middle East Airlines. The BdL is also the dominant shareholder of the Intra Investment Company (IIC) which in turn owns 53% of Casino du Liban, making it the only central bank worldwide to rule over a Las Vegas-style gambling casino. Lebanese Civil War
The Lebanese Civil War ( ar, الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية, translit=Al-Ḥarb al-Ahliyyah al-Libnāniyyah) was a multifaceted armed conflict that took place from 1975 to 1990. It resulted in an estimated 120,000 fatalities and an exodus of almost one million people from Lebanon. The diversity of the Lebanese population played a notable role in the lead-up to and during the conflict: Sunni Muslims and Christians comprised the majority in the coastal cities; Shia Muslims were primarily based in the south and the Beqaa Valley in the east; and Druze and Christians populated the country's mountainous areas.
