Edmond De Schampheleer
Edmond De Schampheleer (21 July 1824, in Brussels – 12 March 1899, in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek) was a Belgian landscape painter and engraver. Biography After completing his studies with Eugène-François de Block in Antwerp, he set himself up as a landscape painter; taking a realistic approach, derived from Théodore Fourmois and the French artists of the Barbizon School. He also combined plein aire techniques with large-scale painting in his studio. He undertook a number of journeys in search of motifs; visiting Bavaria, the Netherlands and France, where he associated with the artists in Barbizon. It would appear, however, that his favorite area was Oosterbeek in Gelderland; a site where many painters congregated. His style increasingly came to resemble that of the 17th century Dutch artists. Alphonse Asselbergs
Alphonse Asselbergs (19 June 1839, Brussels - 10 April 1916, Uccle) was a Belgian painter, primarily of landscapes and forest scenes. Life and work He was born to Henri Asselbergs, a successful merchant in the paper trade. He and his brother, Emile, attended the local atheneum. At the age of twenty, he went to work for his father's company. He became interested in art after a chance meeting with the landscape painter, Edouard Huberti, and created his first paintings, of the Kempen, in 1861. For several years after, he vacillated between his comfortable, upper-class life as a businessman, and the risks involved in becoming an artist. Much of his training in art came from Huberti, and he would travel with him in the area around Namur. It was there he befriended Théodore T'Scharner (1826-1906), a student of Ferdinand Marinus, with whom he would go on painting expeditions in the Ardennes. The Order of Leopold ( nl, Leopoldsorde, french: Ordre de Léopold, ) is one of the three current Belgian national honorary orders of knighthood. It is the oldest and highest order of Belgium and is named in honour of its founder, King Leopold I. It consists of a military, a maritime and a civil division. The maritime division is only awarded to personnel of the merchant navy, and the military division to military personnel. The decoration was established on 11 July 1832 and is awarded by Royal order. Charles De Coster
Charles-Theodore-Henri De Coster (20 August 1827 – 7 May 1879) was a Belgian novelist whose efforts laid the basis for a native Belgian literature. Early life and education He was born in Munich; his father, Augustin De Coster, was a native of Liège, who was attached to the household of the Apostolic Nuncio to Bavaria in Munich, but soon returned to Belgium. Charles was placed in a Brussels bank, but in 1850 he entered the Université libre de Bruxelles, where he completed his studies in 1855. He was one of the founders of the Société des Joyeux, a small literary club, more than one member of which was to achieve literary distinction. De Coster made his debut as a poet in the ''Revue trimestrielle'', founded in 1854, and his first efforts in prose were contributed to a periodical entitled ''Uylenspiegel'' (founded 1856). Camille van Camp (3 June 1834, Tongeren - 16 November 1891, Montreux) was a Belgian portrait and landscape painter, watercolorist, and engraver. Life and work His father was a lawyer; originally from Antwerp. From 1848 to 1853, he studied at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles with François-Joseph Navez, Louis Gallait and . He paid a visit to Florence in 1857, where he copied the Old Masters at the Uffizi. Two years later, he did the same thing at the Louvre in Paris. In 1863, he and his friend, Hippolyte Boulenger, went to Tervuren, the site of a flourishing artists' colony. Félicien Victor Joseph Rops (7 July 1833 – 23 August 1898) was a Belgian artist associated with Symbolism and the Parisian Fin-de Siecle. He was a painter, illustrator, caricaturist and a prolific and innovative print maker, particularly in intaglio (etching and aquatint). Although not well known to the general public, Rops was greatly respected by his peers and actively pursued and celebrated as an illustrator by the publishers, authors, and poets of his time.
