Edmond Blake
Edmond Blake (1803–1895) was the last Mayor of the old Galway Corporation. Blake was a member of one of The Tribes of Galway, and the son of a previous Mayor, Colonel John Blake (1830–1836). He served from 1836 to 1840. In compensation for the loss of office, Blake received the Civic Sword and Mace in 1840. He married Anne St. George of Tyrone House, Kilcolgan Kilcolgan (), is a village on the mouth of the Kilcolgan River at Dunkellin Bay in County Galway, Ireland. The settlement is at the junction of the N67 and R458 roads, which lies between Gort and Clarinbridge. The village is near the site of ..., and was survived by his daughter, Anne. The Tribes Of Galway
The Tribes of Galway ( ga, Treibheanna na Gaillimhe) were 14 merchant families who dominated the political, commercial and social life of the city of Galway in western Ireland between the mid-13th and late 19th centuries. They were the families of Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, Darcy, Deane, Font, French, Joyce, Kirwan, Lynch, Martyn, Morris and Skerritt. Of the 14 families, 12 were of Anglo Norman origin, while two — the Darcy (''Ó Dorchaidhe'') and Kirwan (''Ó Ciardhubháin'') families — were Normanised Irish Gaels. Tyrone House
Tyrone House in County Galway is a ruined manor house, built in the 1770s on a promontory by the estuary of the Kilcolgan river, about from the village of Kilcolgan, County Galway, Ireland. The house was destroyed by the local Irish Republican Army (IRA) unit during the Irish War of Independence. History Tyrone House, County Galway, was built in 1779. It should not be confused with Tyrone House, Marlborough Street, Dublin, a townhouse designed by Richard Cassels for The 1st Earl of Tyrone of the 3rd creation in 1740. Its original owner was Christopher St. George, scion of an old Norman Galwegian family. The house was reputedly designed by John Roberts (1712/14–1796) of Waterford, who also designed Moore Hall in County Mayo and Waterford Cathedral. Kilcolgan (), is a village on the mouth of the Kilcolgan River at Dunkellin Bay in County Galway, Ireland. The settlement is at the junction of the N67 and R458 roads, which lies between Gort and Clarinbridge. The village is near the site of the Galway Bay drowning tragedy. Kilcolgan was designated as a census town by the Central Statistics Office for the first time in the 2016 census, at which time it had a population of 141 people. The council has jurisdiction throughout its administrative area of the city of Galway which is the largest city in the province of Connacht, in Ireland. The current mayor is Clodagh Higgins, ( FG). Election to the office The Mayor is elected to office annually by Councillors of Galway City Council from amongst its members. There is no popular vote. Up to 1841, Mayors were elected in August and took office in September. There was a strong tradition of festivities to mark this start of a new municipal year. Current practice is for the term of office to begin in June with the former Mayor presenting the Chain of Office to the incoming Mayor, thus formally inaugurating a new term. The process is repeated the following June, unless the same person is given a second consecutive term.
