Edith Latham Kernot
Edith Latham Kernot MBE (4 December 1877 – 19 October 1967) was an Australian community worker in Geelong. She supported the District nurses, the local Red Cross and Geelong Hospital. She was vice-president of Geelong Hospital and she sat on the Charities Board of Victoria. Life Kernot was born in Geelong in 1877. She had an elder sibling and six younger ones who survived childhood. She showed an early talent for the violin and she would travel each week for lessons. She gave a performance as a teenager for the Ladies Benevolent Society and throughout her life she own and played her Duke violin. Her husband was Walter Charles Kernot who was a chemist. His uncle had founded a stationary / chemist business. She supported the District Nursing Society and she became its vice President. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. Geelong Hospital
The University Hospital Geelong, formerly the Geelong Hospital, is an Australian public hospital located in Ryrie Street, Geelong, Victoria. The hospital is part of Barwon Health, Victoria's largest regional health care provider, which has 21 sites. It is the largest hospital in regional Victoria and the only tertiary hospital outside of the Melbourne Metropolitan area. The site is bounded by Ryrie, Bellarine, Myers, and Swanston Streets. History Originally opened as the Geelong Infirmary and Benevolent Asylum in 1852 on the Ryrie Street site, it treated 344 inpatients in its first year. Christian Waller
Christian Marjory Emily Carlyle Waller (Yandell) (2 August 1894 - 25 May 1954) was an Australian printmaker, illustrator, muralist and stained-glass artist. At 15 she moved to Melbourne, where she studied at the National Gallery School. In 1915 she married fellow-student Mervyn Napier Waller. Christian Waller was Australia's only professional woman stained-glass artist until the craft revival of the 1970s and was much sought-after as an illustrator and stained-glass artist; after the War, she had a five-year waiting list and more commissions than she could execute. Her glass adorns over 20 churches in Victoria and New South Wales. Christ Church, Geelong
The Christ Church is an Anglican church located in , Victoria, Australia. Designed by Edmund Blacket, the church is the oldest Anglican church in Victoria, in continuous use on its original site. On 9 October 1974 the church was listed on the Victorian Heritage Register with the following statement of significance: History The Geelong parish pre-dates the Diocese of Melbourne and was founded on 7 October 1843, when the Bishop of Australia, William Grant Broughton, laid the foundation stone at the north-east corner of the present nave. The church was opened and dedicated on 27 June 1847, and the enlarged church was consecrated on 25 October 1859. The church is the only one in Victoria designed by the colonial architect, Edmund Blacket. It was enlarged in 1855 by the addition of the transepts and sanctuary. In 1941 Walter Charles Kernot, died. Edith Betty Kernot
Edith Betty Kernot (26 July 1910 – 19 October 1984) was an Australian golfer. She was twice the Australian national women's amateur golf champion, in 1937 and 1938. Life Kernot was born in Geelong. She was the last of three children born to Edith Latham (born Hobday) and Walter Charles Kernot. They were both active in the local community and her mother had also played golf. She began to play the game when she was thirteen and in 1925 she won the under-15 category nationally. After that she competed at state and national competitions. In 1937 she first won the Australian Women's Amateur championship and she was also chosen to represent Australia in the four person team to contest the Tasman Cup with New Zealand. In August 1938 she retained the title of National Women's golf champion.
