Ancient World
Ancient history is a time period from the beginning of writing and recorded human history to as far as late antiquity. The span of recorded history is roughly 5,000 years, beginning with the Sumerian cuneiform script. Ancient history covers all continents inhabited by humans in the period 3000 BCAD 500. The three-age system periodizes ancient history into the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age, with recorded history generally considered to begin with the Bronze Age. The start and end of the three ages varies between world regions. In many regions the Bronze Age is generally considered to begin a few centuries prior to 3000 BC, while the end of the Iron Age varies from the early first millennium BC in some regions to the late first millennium AD in others. Michael Whitby
L. Michael Whitby is a British ancient historian of Late Antiquity. He specialises in late Roman history, early Byzantine history and historiography. He is currently pro-vice-chancellor and head of the College of Arts and Law at the University of Birmingham. Early life Whitby read '' Literae Humaniores'' at Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford. He then spent three years working as a civil servant in the Scottish Office. He returned to Oxford to conduct postgraduate study in Byzantine history. Academic career Whitby held a junior research fellowship at Merton College, Oxford. In 1987, he joined the Ancient History department at the University of St Andrews. He became head of department in 1993 and received a personal chair in 1995 as Professor of Ancient History. Walter Scheidel
Walter Scheidel (born 9 July 1966) is an Austrian historian who teaches ancient history at Stanford University, California. Scheidel's main research interests are ancient social and economic history, pre-modern historical demography, and comparative and transdisciplinary approaches to world history. Biography From 1984 to 1993, Scheidel studied Ancient History and numismatics at the University of Vienna, where he obtained his doctorate in 1993. In 1998, he completed his habilitation at the University of Graz. From 1990 until 1994, he worked as an administrative and research assistant at the University of Vienna. Sitta Von Reden
Sitta von Reden (born 1962 in Hannover) is a German ancient historian and Professor of Ancient History at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, Freiburg. She is particularly known for her research on ancient economics, and the social and cultural history of the Graeco-Roman world. Education and career Von Reden studied economics and history at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, Freiburg (graduating in 1987), and then studied Classical Philology and History at the Free University Berlin and the University of Cambridge. Von Reden received her doctorate in Ancient History at the University of Cambridge. She was Junior Research Fellowship at The Queen's College, Oxford. Mark Golden
Mark Golden (August 6, 1948 – April 9, 2020) was a Canadian academic. At the time of his death he was professor emeritus in the Department of Classics at the University of Winnipeg. Golden received his BA, MA, and PhD all from University of Toronto. In 1998 he was the recipient of the Erica and Arnold Rogers Award for Research Excellence. He wrote several books on the history of childhood, sexuality and sport in the ancient world. Clifford Ando
Clifford Ando (born 1969) is an American classicist who specializes in Roman law and religion. His work deals primarily with law, religion, and government in the Imperial era, particularly issues of Roman citizenship, legal pluralism, and legal procedure. In the history of law, his work addresses the relations among civil law, public law, and international law. Ando is a professor in the Department of Classics, History and Law and in the College at the University of Chicago. He is a research fellow in the Department of Classics and World Languages at the University of South Africa, and the recipient of several fellowships, grants, and prizes. He has held fellowship and visiting professorships in Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, and South Africa. Jonathan Edmondson
Jonathan Charles Edmondson (born 1959) is a British-born historian. He holds Full Professor and Distinguished Research Professorship status at York University and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Early life and education Edmondson was born in 1959. He completed his education at the University of Cambridge before emigrating to Canada. Career After earning his PhD, Edmondson joined the faculty at York University in 1987.
