Edinburgh Corporation Election, 1972
An Election to the Edinburgh Corporation was held on 2 May 1972, alongside municipal elections across Scotland. Of the councils 69 seats, 23 were up for election. Following the election, with two by-elections pending, Edinburgh Corporation was composed of 33 Labour councillors, 21 Progressives, 9 Conservatives, and 5 Liberals. Labour did particularly well in the 1972 municipal elections across Scotland, and this was also the case in Edinburgh, where the party came close to gaining control of the council for the first time, controlling 33 of the councils 68 seats. The Liberals, with 5 seats, held the balance of power in the new council. Following the election Edinburgh corporation would elect its first Labour Lord Provost; Jack Kane. Edinburgh Corporation
The City of Edinburgh Council is the local government authority for the city of Edinburgh, capital of Scotland. With a population of in mid-2019, it is the second most populous local authority area in Scotland. In its current form, the council was created in 1996 under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, to replace the City of Edinburgh District Council of the Lothian region, which had, itself, been created in 1975. The history of local government in Edinburgh, however, stretches back much further. Around 1130, David I made the town a royal burgh and a burgh council, based at the Old Tolbooth is recorded continuously from the 14th century. Merchiston ( ) is a residential area around Merchiston Avenue in the south-west of Edinburgh, Scotland. Location Merchiston Avenue is 1.3 miles Southwest of the West End of Edinburgh's principal street, Princes Street. Other areas near Merchiston include Morningside to the southeast, Burghmuirhead (including Holy Corner and Church Hill) to the east and Bruntsfield to the northeast. History The first known reference to Merchiston is found in the 1266 Exchequer Rolls of Scotland. At this point Merchiston consisted of one of a number of independently owned estates to the southwest of the Burgh Muir. Alexander Napier, a wealthy Edinburgh merchant and provost of the city, acquired the estate from King James I in 1436. Kenneth Borthwick
Kenneth Borthwick CBE DL JP (1915–2017) was a 20th-century Scottish businessman and Tory politician who served as Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1977 to 1980 and as Chairman of the 1986 Commonwealth Games. Life He was born in Leith in the final months of 1915. He was educated at Hermitage Primary School south of Leith Links, then, due to his father's death, won a place at George Heriot's School as a foundationer. He joined the Aberdeen police force in 1935 and served there for 12 years, also serving in the Second World War as a navigator in the RAF. In 1947 he emigrated to South Africa with his young family, setting up business as a confectioner, but returned to Scotland in 1956, to avoid his children being educated in the apartheid system. He then became interested in local politics, serving both on the Lothian Regional Council and Edinburgh District Council.
