Charlotte Square
300px, Robert Adam's palace-fronted north side Charlotte Square is a garden square in Edinburgh, Scotland, part of the New Town, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The square is located at the west end of George Street and was intended to mirror St. Andrew Square in the east. The gardens, one of the collection of New Town Gardens, are private and not publicly accessible. History Initially named St. George's Square in James Craig's original plan, it was renamed in 1786 after King George III's Queen and first daughter, to avoid confusion with George Square to the south of the Old Town. Charlotte Square was the last part of the initial phase of the New Town to be "completed" in 1820 (note- the north-west section at Glenfinlas Street was not completed until 1990 due to a long-running boundary dispute). The ''Gazetteer for Scotland'' is a gazetteer covering the geography, history and people of Scotland. It was conceived in 1995 by Bruce Gittings of the University of Edinburgh and David Munro of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, and contains 25,870 entries as of July 2019. It claims to be "the largest dedicated Scottish resource created for the web". The Gazetteer for Scotland provides a carefully researched and editorially validated resource widely used by students, researchers, tourists and family historians with interests in Scotland. Thomas Hastie Bryce
Prof Thomas Hastie Bryce LLD FRS FSA FRSE (20 October 1862 – 16 May 1946) was a Scottish anatomist, medical author and archaeologist. He was Regius Professor of Anatomy at the University of Glasgow 1909 to 1935 and also Curator of the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow. He is primarily remembered for his work on human embryology and comparative anatomy. His students referred to him as Tommy Bryce. Life Bryce was born in Dalkeith, just south of Edinburgh on 20 October 1862, the son of Dr William Bryce. He was educated at Edinburgh Collegiate School and then studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating MB, CM. In 1901 he obtained his MD from the University of Edinburgh with a thesis entitled, “Maturation of the ovum in Echinus". Henry Cowan
Sir William Henry Cowan (22 May 1862 – 11 January 1932) was a politician in the United Kingdom. The son of William Cowan and Elizabeth Giles, he was educated at Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh Collegiate School and the University of Edinburgh. He was elected as Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Guildford from 1906 to 1910 and for Aberdeenshire Eastern from 1910 to 1922, then as a Unionist for Islington North from 1923 to 1929. As a parliamentarian, Cowan became interested in matters concerning immigration including promoting immigration of British families to dominions such as Australia. William James Cullen, Lord Cullen
The Hon William James Cullen (9 September 1859 – 19 June 1941) was a Scottish judge who rose to be a Senator of the College of Justice. Early life Cullen was the son of Thomas Cullen, an inspector of stamps and taxes in Edinburgh. The family lived at 6 Waterloo Place at the east end of Princes Street. He was educated at Edinburgh Collegiate School and at the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated with an Master of Arts, MA in 1880 and an Bachelor of Laws, LLB in 1883. Career In 1884, Cullen joined the company of J & F Adam as a writer to the signet, a specialist form of solicitor. Frederick Gebbie
Sir Frederick St John Gebbie Order of the Indian Empire, CIE (7 August 1871 – 20 March 1939) was a British civil engineer in India. Gebbie was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and was educated at Edinburgh Collegiate School, the University of Edinburgh and the Royal Indian Engineering College. He joined the Bombay Presidency Public Works Department as an Assistant Engineer in 1893, was promoted to Executive Engineer in 1899, Superintending Engineer in 1911, and Chief Engineer in 1915, and became Secretary of the Department in 1916. He worked for many years in Sind Division, Sind and was one of the main proponents of the Lloyd Barrage at Sukkur, which was constructed to fertilise the region. Colonel Henry Halcro Johnston CB CBE DL FRSE FLS (13 September 1856 – 18 October 1939) was a Scottish botanist, physician, rugby union international and Deputy Lieutenant for Orkney. Alfred Edward Moffat (1863–1950) was a Scottish musician, composer and collector of music. He was born in Edinburgh on 4 December 1863. His father was John Moffat, a photographer, and his mother was Sophia Maria Knott. He was educated at Edinburgh Collegiate School in 27-28 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh. Moffat studied musical composition in Berlin for five years under Ludwig Bussler. He remained in Berlin for another six years writing for German music publishing firms.Who was Who.
