A hypocorism ( or ; from Ancient Greek: (), from (), 'to call by pet names', sometimes also ''hypocoristic'') or pet name is a name used to show affection for a person. It may be a diminutive form of a person's name, such as ''Izzy'' for Isabel or ''Bob (given name), Bob'' for Robert, or it may be unrelated. John Edie (New Zealand Politician)
John Edie (1856 – 7 June 1928) was a Liberal Party Member of Parliament in the Otago region of New Zealand. He was a surveyor and an engineer, and also spent time as a farmer. He was Mayor of Lawrence. Early life Edie was born in Newcastle, New South Wales in 1856. He came to New Zealand as a child and attended school in Waitahuna near Lawrence. He joined the survey department in 1873 and surveyed the Catlins River Branch railway line, but construction did not start until 1879. In 1876, at age 20, he became assistant surveyor to the Government. He joined the Tuapeka County Council in 1885 as an engineer and remained in that position until 1919, when he resigned to stand in the . Political career In the , Edie contested the electorate. Edith Bouvier Beale (November 7, 1917 – January 14, 2002), nicknamed Little Edie, was an American socialite, fashion model, and cabaret performer. She was a first cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Jacqueline Onassis and Lee Radziwill, Lee Bouvier Radziwill. She is best known for her participation (along with Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale, her mother, with whom she lived) in the 1975 documentary film ''Grey Gardens'' by Albert and David Maysles. Known as Big Edie, she was a sister of John Vernou Bouvier III and an aunt of Jacqueline Onassis. Edie Ochiltree is a character in Sir Walter Scott's 1816 novel ''The Antiquary'', a licensed beggar of the legally protected class known as Blue-gowns or bedesmen, who follows a regular beat around the fictional Scottish town of Fairport. Scott based his character on Andrew Gemmels, a real beggar he had known in his childhood. Along with Jonathan Oldbuck, the novel's title-character, Ochiltree is widely seen as one of Scott's finest creations.
