Edie Huggins
Edie Huggins (August 14, 1935 – July 29, 2008) was an American television reporter, journalist and broadcaster. In 1966, Huggins became one of the first African American women to report on television in Philadelphia, remaining a fixture on WCAU-TV for 42 years; the longest consecutive television run of any Philadelphia TV news reporter in history. Early life and career Huggins was born Edith "Eddie" Lou Thompson on August 14, 1935, in Saint Joseph, Missouri. She became known as Edie (pronounced ''Eedee'') later in life. She graduated from Bartlett High School in St. Joseph in 1953. John Rufus Edie (January 14, 1814 – August 27, 1888) was an Opposition Party and Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania and a United States Army officer in the American Civil War. Early life John Rufus Edie was born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1814. He attended the public schools and then Emmitsburg College in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He served as principal of the Gettysburg schools for several years. Edie studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1840 and commenced practice in Somerset, Pennsylvania. His son, John R. Edith Bouvier Beale (November 7, 1917 – January 14, 2002), nicknamed Little Edie, was an American socialite, fashion model, and cabaret performer. She was a first cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Jacqueline Onassis and Lee Radziwill, Lee Bouvier Radziwill. Edie Ochiltree is a character in Sir Walter Scott's 1816 novel ''The Antiquary'', a licensed beggar of the legally protected class known as Blue-gowns or bedesmen, who follows a regular beat around the fictional Scottish town of Fairport. Scott based his character on Andrew Gemmels, a real beggar he had known in his childhood. Along with Jonathan Oldbuck, the novel's title-character, Ochiltree is widely seen as one of Scott's finest creations.
