Edgerston Church, Scottish Borders
Edgerston is a village and an estate about north of the Anglo-Scottish border, and south of Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland in the former Roxburghshire. According to the Clan Rutherfurd family history site, Edgerston was part of the Rutherfurd family estate since at least 1448. Thomas Rutherfurd built Edgerston House in 1695, John Rutherfurd added two new wings in 1793, and a tower was added by William Rutherfurd-Oliver in 1840. The estate was sold to Frederick Scott Oliver in 1915. The Olivers owned Edgerston estate until 1980, when it was sold and divided up. A bust of FS Oliver is displayed in the village hall. The current owner, Johannes De Gier, bought the house and land in 2006 and commenced a major renovation project lasting several years. Edgerston church was built in 1838. The church is still in use to this day, and local children were invited to ring the bells on the eve of the millennium. The village school had a role of 60 children in 1880, b ... The Scottish Borders ( sco, the Mairches, 'the Marches'; gd, Crìochan na h-Alba) is one of 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders the City of Edinburgh, Dumfries and Galloway, East Lothian, Midlothian, South Lanarkshire, West Lothian and, to the south-west, south and east, the English counties of Cumbria and Northumberland. Camptown, Scottish Borders
Camptown is a small settlement on the A68, in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, 5m (8 km) south of Jedburgh, and the same distance south to Carter Bar. The village lies on the course of the Jed Water, and the remains of a peel tower are close by at Edgerston. The village has a church and village hall at nearby Edgerston, a bus service to Jedburgh and Newcastle, a memorial cairn, and a telephone box. Schooling takes place in Jedburgh. Other places nearby are Bairnkine, Bonchester Bridge, Crailing, Ferniehirst Castle, Hobkirk, the Jed Water, Mossburnford, and Oxnam. Trivia Scottish settlers named the town in Pennsylvania after the Borders settlement, which in turn was the inspiration for the minstrel song Camptown Races by Stephen Foster. Southdean
Southdean is a hamlet in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, on the A6088, by the Jed Water and in the Wauchope Forest area. Other settlements nearby include Abbotrule, Bedrule, Bonchester Bridge, Denholm, Hallrule, Hobkirk and the Swinnie Forest. Ruins which can be seen nearby include the remains of Southdean Old Parish Church, the remains of Dykeraw Tower, and the remains of Slack's Tower. Oxnam ( sco, Owsenam) is a village near Jedburgh, in Roxburghshire in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland. It is a primarily residential village. The placename Oxnam is from Old English ''oxa'' (genitive ''oxan'') "oxen" and ''ham'' "village", the meaning being "village where ox are bred". The name was recorded as ''Oxenamm'' in 1148, and sometimes known as Oxenham. Jed Water
The Jed Water is a river and a tributary of the River Teviot in the Borders region of Scotland. In total the Jed Water is over long and it falls . It flows into the Teviot near Jedfoot Bridge () two miles north of Jedburgh. Jed Water rises from a source on Carlin Tooth in the Cheviot Hills where it is first known as Raven Burn. Description The river in past times was the main source of water for the monks living in Jedburgh Abbey. It also powered a watermill in the town of Jedburgh although this no longer exists. It gives its name to Jedburgh and Jedforest. In the 1800s it had trout in the river. The Ordnance gazetteer said Jed Water "in the parts immediately above the town of Jedburgh ... more of the elements of fine landscape than during a whole day's ride in the most favourite Scottish haunts of tourists." Hobkirk
Hobkirk ( gd, Eaglais Ruail) is a village and civil parish in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, by the Rule Water, south-west of Jedburgh and south-east of Hawick. Other places nearby include Abbotrule, Bonchester Bridge, Camptown, Hallrule, Bedrule, Southdean, Denholm, Rubers Law, and the Wauchope Forest. Hobkirk was sometimes known as "Hopekirk". Ferniehirst Castle
Ferniehirst Castle (sometimes spelled Ferniehurst) is an L-shaped construction on the east bank of the Jed Water, about a mile and a half south of Jedburgh, in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, and in the former county of Roxburghshire. It is an ancient seat of the Clan Kerr, and after a period of institutional use it was restored for residential use by Peter Kerr, 12th Marquess of Lothian, in the late 20th century. History Sixteenth-century conflict The original castle, built by the Ker (or Kerr) family around 1470, was occupied by English forces in 1547, during the war of the Rough Wooing. The English were dislodged by a force of Sir John Ker's clansmen, and the Earl of Huntly reinforced by André de Montalembert and French auxiliaries led by Captain Pierre Longue in February 1549. Bonchester Bridge
Bonchester Bridge ( Scots ''Binster Brig'') is a village in Roxburghshire, within the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, lying on the Rule Water, six miles away from the market town of Hawick. History The name of the town is said to be Roman being devised from the term "Bona Castra" meaning "good camp" and on nearby Bonchester Hill to the east of the village, it is topped by a hill fort. In 1701 the town's coaching inn "The Horse and Hound" was opened, although the building there today dates from rebuilding over 100 years later by James Chisholme. The bridge in the name dates from the 19th century when a toll road was constructed from the pass over the Cheviots on the England/Scotland border at Carter Bar and the market town of Hawick which is six miles away. Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale (''Rosbrog, Eadaraig agus Srath Labhdair'' in Scottish Gaelic) is a lieutenancy area of Scotland. The lieutenancy area was created on 1 April 1996, when local government was reorganised across Scotland under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994.
