Edgehill, Warwickshire
Edge Hill is an escarpment and Edgehill a hamlet (place), hamlet in the civil parishes in England, civil parish of Ratley and Upton House, Warwickshire, Upton, Stratford-on-Avon District, southern Warwickshire, England. Edge Hill gave its name to the first battle of the English Civil War, in which it was a prominent feature. The hamlet has a public house, an eccentric building of local Hornton Stone called the Castle Inn that was built in the 1740s to the designs of Sanderson Miller (1716–80). It is controlled by the Hook Norton Brewery. Battle The narrow wood on the scarp of Edge Hill, in the south-east overlooks the lower slope and the plain on which the battle was fought. Battle Of Edgehill
The Battle of Edgehill (or Edge Hill) was a pitched battle of the First English Civil War. It was fought near Edge Hill and Kineton in southern Warwickshire on Sunday, 23 October 1642. All attempts at constitutional compromise between King Charles and Parliament broke down early in 1642. Both the King and Parliament raised large armies to gain their way by force of arms. In October, at his temporary base near Shrewsbury, the King decided to march to London in order to force a decisive confrontation with Parliament's main army, commanded by the Earl of Essex. Late on 22 October, both armies unexpectedly found the enemy to be close by. The next day, the Royalist army descended from Edge Hill to force battle. After the Parliamentarian artillery opened a cannonade, the Royalists attacked. Both armies consisted mostly of inexperienced and sometimes ill-equipped troops. Edgehill College
Edgehill College was a co-educational independent school located in Bideford, Devon. Founded in 1884 by the Bible Christian movement, Edgehill was one of a number of independent schools owned by the Methodist Church of Great Britain and was sister-school to nearby Shebbear College. It was traditionally the principal girls' independent school in the area, becoming co-educational in 1992. The Preparatory School was always co-educational, with boys boarding at Shawleigh beginning in 1969. Houses Pupils were assigned membership to competitive houses on enrolment. Since September 2003 until the school's closure these houses were named after local rivers: Tamar, Taw and Torridge. Bullrun (stylized BULLRUN) is a clandestine, highly classified program to crack encryption of online communications and data, which is run by the United States National Security Agency (NSA). The British Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) has a similar program codenamed Edgehill. According to the Bullrun classification guide published by ''The Guardian'', the program uses multiple methods including computer network exploitation, interdiction, industry relationships, collaboration with other intelligence community entities, and advanced mathematical techniques. Information about the program's existence was leaked in 2013 by Edward Snowden. Although Snowden's documents do not contain technical information on exact cryptanalytic capabilities because Snowden did not have clearance access to such information, they do contain a 2010 GCHQ presentation which claims that "vast amounts of encrypted Internet data which have up till now been discarded are now exploitable". Ella Mary Edghill (born 13 November 1881 at Aldershot; died 24 January 1964 at St Mary's Hospital, Bristol) was a British translator known primarily for her translation of ''Categories'' which appeared in Volume 1 (1928) of '' The Works of Aristotle'' series, edited by W. D. Ross and J. A. Smith and for her translation of On Interpretation by Aristotle. She was the daughter of Rev. John Cox Edghill, DD, Chaplain General to British Armed Forces, and Mary Nesfield. She was educated at Bedford High School and Newnham College, Cambridge, where she took the Classical Tripos. She then achieved an MA and education diploma at London University. Following training at Notting Hill High school she became the senior classics mistress at Bedford High School.
