Edgefield (Renick, West Virginia)
Edgefield is a historic home and farm complex located at Renick, Greenbrier County, West Virginia. The Edgefield House is a frame, two-story, three-bay building with a side gable roof. It has a two-story ell with an asymmetrical gabled roof. The front facade is dominated by a full-height (two-story) open porch supported by four large square columns. Also on the property are the contributing coal shed, meat house, cistern, granary, machine shed, and two barns. Between 1935 and 1960, Floy Whiting Whorrell (a daughter of G. W. Whiting), a widow operated (and later owned) the farm. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. Falling Spring is a town in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, United States. It is also known as Renick from the name of its post office ( ZIP Code 24966). The population was 171 at the 2020 census. History In 1769, Major William Renick from Augusta County, Virginia, settled on an entry of in the northern area of Greenbrier County, an area north of Lewisburg known as Falling Spring. Spring Creek Presbyterian Church was established in 1783. The first pastor was Rev. John McCue. The original site of the church was in Spring Creek, about south of Renick. A school was established in the town in 1796. In 1928 the public school system established Renick High School in what is now the Renick Junior High School building. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad was built through the center of town around 1900, following the Greenbrier River. Greenbrier County () is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 32,977. Its county seat is Lewisburg. The county was formed in 1778 from Botetourt and Montgomery counties in Virginia. History Prior to the arrival of European-American settlers around 1740, Greenbrier County, like most of West Virginia, was used as a hunting ground by the Shawnee and Cherokee nations. They called this land ''Can-tuc-kee''. Shawnee leaders, including Pucksinwah and later his son Tecumseh, were alarmed by the arrival of the European settlers, who by 1771 had set up extensive trade in the area. Granary
A granary is a storehouse or room in a barn for threshed grain or animal feed. Ancient or primitive granaries are most often made of pottery. Granaries are often built above the ground to keep the stored food away from mice and other animals and from floods. Early origins From ancient times grain has been stored in bulk. The oldest granaries yet found date back to 9500 BC and are located in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic A settlements in the Jordan Valley. The first were located in places between other buildings. However beginning around 8500 BC, they were moved inside houses, and by 7500 BC storage occurred in special rooms. The first granaries measured 3 x 3 m on the outside and had suspended floors that protected the grain from rodents and insects and provided air circulation.
