Edgar Ross (boxer)
Edgar "Mad Dog" Ross (July 29, 1949 – June 25, 2012) was an American professional boxer who competed from 1972 and 1979. As an amateur, he won the Alabama Golden Gloves as a light heavyweight. Biography Ross grew up in Tuscaloosa; his brother Ronnie played football for Auburn, but he was too violent for football, according to a childhood friend, and picked fights on the Tuscaloosa streets before turning to amateur boxing on the advice of a Tuscaloosa County deputy sheriff who, himself an amateur boxer, had seen Ross beat up on people in bars and parking lots. After two fights he joined the Navy and served in Vietnam, and after his return returned to boxing, compiling a 24-4 record and winning the state's Golden Gloves competition. He turned pro in 1972, fighting his first nine fights out of Mobile and then joining the stable of Pete Ashlock in Orlando, Florida. Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Tuscaloosa ( ) is a city in and the seat of Tuscaloosa County in west-central Alabama, United States, on the Black Warrior River where the Gulf Coastal and Piedmont plains meet. Alabama's fifth-largest city, it had an estimated population of 101,129 in 2019. It was known as Tuskaloosa until the early 20th century. Ray Charles Leonard (born May 17, 1956), best known as "Sugar" Ray Leonard, is an American former professional boxer, motivational speaker, and occasional actor. Often regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time, he competed professionally between 1977 and 1997, winning world titles in five weight classes; the lineal championship in three weight classes; as well as the undisputed welterweight championship. Leonard was part of the "Four Kings", a group of boxers who all fought each other throughout the 1980s, consisting of Leonard, Roberto Durán, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler. Leonard also won a light welterweight gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Fairhope is a city in Baldwin County, Alabama, United States, located on the eastern shoreline of Mobile Bay. The 2020 Census lists the population of the city as 22,477. Fairhope is a principal city of the Daphne-Fairhope-Foley metropolitan area, which includes all of Baldwin County. History Fairhope was founded in November 1894 on the site of the former Alabama City as a Georgist "Single-Tax" colony by the Fairhope Industrial Association, a group of 28 followers of economist Henry George who had incorporated earlier that year in Des Moines, Iowa. Wilfred "Wilfredo" Benítez (born September 12, 1958) is an American-born Puerto Rican former professional boxer and the youngest world champion in the sport's history. Earning his first of three career world titles in separate weight divisions at the age of seventeen, he is best remembered as a skilled and aggressive fighter with exceptional defensive abilities, along with his fights with Roberto Durán, Thomas Hearns, and Sugar Ray Leonard. Maurice Hope (born 6 December 1951) is a British former boxer, who was world junior middleweight champion. Born in Antigua, he grew up in Hackney, London. He represented Great Britain at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany. Boxing career Amateur career Maurice Hope was born in St. John's, Antigua, and moved at a very young age to the UK.
