Edgar Joel
Edgar Joel (born August 30, 1961) is an American salsa musician, trombonist, and bandleader. He was born in Philadelphia to a Puerto Rican family originating from Barranquitas, Puerto Rico. As the bandleader of his self-titled band, he recruited Anthony Colón as the lead vocalist of the group. His first hit was a cover of Tito Livio's "Hasta El Sol De Hoy" which reached number 11 on the ''Billboard'' Hot Latin Songs which earned the band two Lo Nuestro nominations for Tropical New Artist of the Year and Tropical Song of the Year in 1994. Salsa Music
Salsa music is a style of Latin American music. Because most of the basic musical components predate the labeling of salsa, there have been many controversies regarding its origin. Most songs considered as salsa are primarily based on son montuno, with elements of Mambo (music), mambo, Latin jazz, Bomba (Puerto Rico), bomba, plena and guaracha. All of these elements are adapted to fit the basic son montuno template when performed within the context of salsa. Originally the name salsa was used to label commercially several styles of Latin dance music, but nowadays it is considered a musical style on its own and one of the staples of Latin American culture. The first self-identified salsa bands were predominantly assembled by Cubans, Cuban and Puerto Ricans, Puerto Rican musicians in New York City in the '70s. The 6th Lo Nuestro Awards ceremony, presented by the Univision, honored the best Latin music of 1993 and 1994 and took place on May 19, 1994, at a live presentation held at the James L. Knight Center in Miami, Florida. The ceremony was broadcast in the United States and Latin America by Univision. During the ceremony, twenty categories were presented. The Tropical Airplay chart (formerly known as Tropical/Salsa and Tropical Songs) is a record chart published by ''Billboard'' magazine introduced in 1994. The first number-one song on the chart was " Quien Eres Tu" by Luis Enrique. Originally, rankings on the chart were determined by the amount of airplay a song received on radio stations that primarily played tropical music, namely music originating from the Spanish-speaking areas of the Caribbean such as salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia, vallenato, and tropical fusions. En Las Nubes
"En las Nubes" ("In the Clouds") is a song written by Gustavo Márquez and first performed by Mexican ballad singer Tito Livio on his studio album ''Fíjate de Mi'' (1993). It was covered by Puerto Rican salsa singer Jerry Rivera on his fourth studio ''Cara de Niño''(1993). Another salsa cover version of the song was recorded by American musician Edgar Joel on his studio album ''Me Atrapa la Noche'' (1994) with Anthony Colón providing the lead vocals for the song. Joel's version reached number-one on the ''Billboard'' Tropical Airplay chart. His cover was recognized as the best-performing song of the year at the 1995 ASCAP Latin Awards.
