Edgar J. Goodspeed
Edgar Johnson Goodspeed (October 23, 1871 – January 13, 1962) was an American theologian and scholar of Greek and the New Testament, and Ernest DeWitt Burton Distinguished Service Professor of the University of Chicago until his retirement. He taught for many years at the University of Chicago, whose collection of New Testament manuscripts he enriched by his searches. The University's collection is now named in his honor. Biography Edgar J. Goodspeed was born in Quincy, Illinois. He was the son of Thomas Wakefield Goodspeed. At the age of ten, Goodspeed has been tutored in Latin by his father's students at Baptist Union Theological Seminary in Morgan Park, Illinois. Edgar J. Goodspeed received pre-college classes at the Old University of Chicago, and finished in 1886. His wife's name was Elfleda Bond, and his father-in-law was Joseph Bond. The Society of Biblical Literature (SBL), founded in 1880 as the Society of Biblical Literature and Exegesis, is an American-based learned society dedicated to the academic study of the Bible and related ancient literature. Its current stated mission is to "foster biblical scholarship". Membership is open to the public and consists of over 8,300 individuals from over 100 countries. As a scholarly organization, SBL has been a constituent society of the American Council of Learned Societies since 1929. Frank Dobias
Frank Dobias (born May 11, 1900) was an illustrator of children's books. Among many other works, his illustrations for the Japanese version of '' Little Black Sambo'' made the book a bestseller in Japan, selling well over a million copies between 1953 and 1988. Early life and career He was born in Gloggnitz, Austria and moved to the United States 1923, where he started his professional career as illustrator mostly for Macmillan Publishers books. ''The Bible: An American Translation'' (AAT) is an English version of the Bible consisting of the Old Testament translated by a group of scholars under the editorship of John Merlin Powis Smith, the Apocrypha translated by Edgar J. Goodspeed, and the New Testament translated by Edgar J. Goodspeed. In a foreword to the 1949 edition, Goodspeed wrote, "The rapid advance of learning in recent years in the fields of history, archaeology, and language has thrown new light upon every part of the Bible.
