Edgar George Brown
Edgar George Brown (1898–1954) was a civil rights advocate, tennis player, union organizer, and politician in the United States in Northwest Washington, DC, in the neighborhood later known as Adams Morgan, where he was a Black lobbyist and active advocate for low paid African American laborers. He was born in Sandoval, Illinois. He was a four-time American Tennis Association champion (1922, 1923, 1928 and 1929). He was known as a master of topspin. He was one of the founders of the National Lawn Tennis Association. He was a member of Franklin D. Roosevelt's Black Cabinet, a founding member of the National Negro Council, and the United Government Employees Union. In July 1941, Brown staged a one-person sit-down strike in Washington National Airport's main coffee shop after being refused a cup because of his being Black. The American Tennis Association (ATA) is based in Largo, Maryland, outside Washington, D.C., and is the oldest African-American sports organization in the United States. The core of the ATA's modern mission continues to be promoting tennis as a sport for black people and developing junior tennis players, but the ATA welcomes people of all backgrounds. Black Cabinet
The Black Cabinet, or Federal Council of Negro Affairs or Black Brain Trust, was the informal term for a group of African Americans who served as public policy advisors to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in his terms in office from 1933 to 1945. Despite its name, it was not an official organization. The term was coined in 1936 by Mary McLeod Bethune and was occasionally used in the press. By mid-1935, there were 45 African Americans working in federal executive departments and New Deal agencies. Lucy Slowe
Lucy Diggs Slowe (July 4, 1885 – October 21, 1937) was an American educator and athlete, and the first Black woman to serve as Dean of Women at any American university. She was a founder of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, the first sorority founded by African-American women. Slowe was a tennis champion, winning the national title of the American Tennis Association's first tournament in 1917, the first African-American woman to win a major sports title. In 1922, Slowe was appointed the first Dean of Women at Howard University. She continued in that role for 15 years until her death. In addition, Slowe created and led two professional associations to support college administrators.
