Edgar (opera)
''Edgar'' is an operatic ''dramma lirico'' in three acts (originally four acts) by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Ferdinando Fontana, freely based on the play in verse ''La Coupe et les lèvres'' by Alfred de Musset. The first performance was given at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on 21 April 1889. The opera was not a success. Puccini repeatedly revised it, before eventually giving up in frustration, declaring the work irredeemable. Development and revisions ''Edgar'', Puccini's second opera, was composed on a commission from the publisher Ricordi after the successful reception of his first stage work, ''Le Villi''. The plot indicates the influence of Wagner's ''Tannhäuser''. Both centre on medieval knights struggling between a life of sensual indulgence and ideal love. Opera
Opera is a form of theatre in which music is a fundamental component and dramatic roles are taken by singers. Such a "work" (the literal translation of the Italian word "opera") is typically a collaboration between a composer and a librettist and incorporates a number of the performing arts, such as acting, scenery, costume, and sometimes dance or ballet. Arturo Toscanini
Arturo Toscanini (; ; March 25, 1867January 16, 1957) was an Italian conductor. He was one of the most acclaimed and influential musicians of the late 19th and early 20th century, renowned for his intensity, his perfectionism, his ear for orchestral detail and sonority, and his eidetic memory. He was at various times the music director of La Scala in Milan and the New York Philharmonic. Later in his career he was appointed the first music director of the NBC Symphony Orchestra (1937–54), and this led to his becoming a household name (especially in the United States) through his radio and television broadcasts and many recordings of the operatic and symphonic repertoire. A tenor is a type of classical music, classical male singing human voice, voice whose vocal range lies between the countertenor and baritone voice types. It is the highest male chest voice type. The tenor's vocal range extends up to C5. The low extreme for tenors is widely defined to be B2, though some roles include an A2 (two As below middle C). Franco Faccio
Francesco (Franco) Antonio Faccio (8 March 1840 – 21 July 1891) was an Italian composer and conductor. A voice type is a group of voices with similar vocal ranges, capable of singing in a similar tessitura, and with similar vocal transition points ('' passaggi''). Voice classification is most strongly associated with European classical music, though it, and the terms it utilizes, are used in other styles of music as well. A singer will choose a repertoire that suits their voice. Konzerthaus Berlin
The Konzerthaus Berlin is a concert hall in Berlin, the home of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. Situated on the Gendarmenmarkt square in the central Mitte district of the city, it was originally built as a theater. It initially operated from 1818 to 1821 under the name of the Schauspielhaus Berlin, then as the Theater am Gendarmenmarkt and Komödie. Felix Krieger (born 1975 in Freiburg im Breisgau) is a German conductor. Biography Krieger began to study piano at age 6, and viola at age 11. At 15 he entered the Musikhochschule of his hometown to study piano, harpsichord and music theory. He studied conducting with Klauspeter Seibel at Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg and was a masterstudent of Carlo Maria Giulini at Scuola di Musica di Fiesole. At the same time he worked as an assistant conductor to Claudio Abbado at the Berlin Philharmonic. Lewes Town Hall
Lewes Town Hall is a municipal building in the High Street in Lewes, East Sussex, England. The structure, which is the meeting place of Lewes Town Council, is a Grade II listed building. History In the medieval period, the site of the town hall was occupied by a large property with a barrel-vaulted undercroft belonging to Lewes Priory but by the mid-16th century it was occupied by a public house known as the Star Inn. Ten Protestant martyrs who were faithful to their cause during the reign of the Catholic monarch, Queen Mary, were held in the undercroft and then burnt at the stake in front of the Star Inn during the Marian Persecutions of 1555–1557. Joseph Vandernoot
Joseph Vandernoot (18 October 1914 – 7 June 1999) was a British conductor who worked with many orchestras and opera companies, and was one of the earliest conductors of opera at the Holland Park open-air theatre in London. After studying at Guildhall School of Music and the Royal College of Music, Vandernoot joined the Royal Artillery and worked for some time for ENSA. For five years Vandernoot was the Musical Director of Ballet Rambert. He also conducted the Orchestre National de Monte Carlo and the Valencia Provincial Orchestra. Vandernoot was the musical director of the Fulham Municipal Orchestra for nearly 30 years, and of the Hammersmith Municipal Opera, the first municipal opera company in Great Britain. Critical Edition (opera)
A critical edition of an opera has been defined by American musicologist Philip Gossett as "an edition that bases itself wherever possible on the very finest and most accurate sources for an opera. That means that it must study the entire performance history of a work."
