Edenton-class Salvage And Rescue Ship
The ''Edenton''-class salvage and rescue ship was a class of salvage and rescue ships that were operated by the United States Navy during the 1970s. Design ''Edenton''-class was a ship class consisting of three purpose built rescue ships, where they were brought into service in the 1970s. This class of ships were succeeded by the Navajo-class rescue and salvage ship, ''Navajo''-class, as the designation ATS-4 and 5 were not used. The ships were armed with two M242 Bushmaster, M242 Busmaster and two M2 Browning, M2 Browning machine guns for self-defense. USCGC ''Alex Haley'' (WMEC-39) is a United States Coast Guard Cutter and former United States Navy vessel that was recommissioned for Coast Guard duty on 10 July 1999. It was first entered service as USS ''Edenton'' (ATS-1), an on 23 January 1971. In 1995, ''Edenton'' won the Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund Award for the Atlantic Fleet. The conversion from a salvage ship to a Coast Guard cutter involved the removal of the stern towing machine, forward crane, and A-frame, and the installation of a flight deck, retractable hangar, and air-search radar. Additionally, her four aging Paxman diesel engines were replaced with four 16-cylinder Caterpillar diesels. The Republic of Korea Navy was established on November 11, 1945, as the Marine Defense Group (later became the Korean Coast Guard) after Korea was liberated from the Empire of Japan on August 15, 1945. The Korean Coast Guard became the Republic of Korea Navy after the South Korean government was established on August 15, 1948. Since its inception and until the 1990s, the Republic of Korea Navy had acquired about 150 former United States Navy ships. As South Korea's economy grew, the ROK Navy was able to build larger and better equipped fleets with local shipbuilders.
