Edelény District
Edelény ( hu, Edelényi járás) is a district in northern part of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. ''Edelény'' is also the name of the town where the district seat is found. The district is located in the Northern Hungary Statistical Region. Geography Edelény District borders with the Slovakian region of Košice to the north, Encs District and Szikszó District to the east, Miskolc District to the south, Kazincbarcika District and Putnok District to the west. The number of the inhabited places in Edelény District is 45. Municipalities The district has 2 towns and 43 villages. (ordered by population, as of 1 January 2012) The bolded municipalities are cities. Demographics In 2011, it had a population of 33,314 and the population density was 46/km². Districts of Hungary are the second-level divisions of Hungary after counties. They replaced the 175 subregions of Hungary in 2013. Altogether, there are 174 districts in the 19 counties, and there are 23 districts in Budapest. Districts of the 19 counties are numbered by Arabic numerals and named after the district seat, while districts of Budapest are numbered by Roman numerals and named after the historical towns and neighbourhoods. In Hungarian, the districts of the capital and the rest of the country hold different titles. Boldva
Boldva is a village in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, Hungary. History The village got its name from the river Bódva. The vicinity had been a settled place since ancient times in the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Written documents mention the village from the 13th century as ''Boldua''. Between 1175 and 1180 the Ordo Saint Benedict built a monastery at Boldva. The monastery church was erected to Saint John the Baptist. At the same time a rotunda was used by the village people. The ruins of this rotunda were excavated in the 1980s, during the renovation of the Árpád age church. A famous codex, the so-called Pray codex, The Sacramentarium Bolvense contains one of the oldest Hungarian text: The Speech at the Funeral. Irota
Irota is a village in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, Hungary. It is 20 kilometres north of the town of Edelény, 180 metres above sea level in a narrow valley. Its only stream, the ‘Hunters’ Creek’ (Vadászpatak in Hungarian) runs south. In the forest area which starts from the northern end of Irota, there is the highest peak of the region (the so-called Goat Bank, or Kecskepad) at a height of 340 metres. History The village was mentioned for the first time in 1320. By 1726, the population consisted both of Hungarian and Ruthenian speakers. Most of the inhabitants were shepherds, foresters and small farmers. In the 19th century, a local quarry was used to produce the locally applied bricks and rooftiles. In 1851, Irota was home to 36 Roman Catholics, 358 Greek Catholics, 5 Calvinists, 4 Evangelicals and 8 Jews.
