Eddy James
Edwin Ernest 'Eddy' James (14 February 1874 – 16 September 1937) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong Football Club, Geelong in the years before and following the formation of the Australian Football League, VFL. Football James started his career as a backman, playing a game at 15 after Geelong were short for players. He moved to the forward line in his return in 1892, and in 1895 finished with 24 goals to be equal third in the VFA goalkicking. In the inaugural VFL season in 1897 VFL season, 1897, he kicked 22 goals in the home-and-away season to share the Coleman Medal, Leading Goalkicker Award with Jack Leith; incidentally, this is the lowest amount of goals to have ever earned this award—and it will likely hold this record in perpetuity due to the high-scoring nature of the modern game. Bendigo
Bendigo ( ) is a city in Victoria, Australia, located in the Bendigo Valley near the geographical centre of the state and approximately north-west of Melbourne, the state capital. Pat Hickey (footballer)
Patrick Joseph Hickey (3 September 1871 – 4 February 1946) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the early days of the Victorian Football League (VFL). A centre half-back, Hickey played for Fitzroy in the Victorian Football Association, winning a premiership in 1895, before being part of the inaugural Fitzroy side in the VFL. He played in their 1898 and 1899 VFL premierships. Aside from being one of the best afield in the 1899 Grand Final, he also won Fitzroy's best and fairest award that year. Joe McShane
Joseph Francis McShane (29 November 1868 – 26 July 1950) was an Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Philip McShane (1835-1908), and Mary Ann McShane (1836-1912), née McCabe, Joseph Francis McShane was born at Geelong on 29 November 1868. His brother, Patrick George McShane (1858–1903), played football for Fitzroy and Geelong in the VFA, and played Test Cricket for Australia. Frank Hailwood
Frank Hailwood (3 April 1873 – 21 May 1944) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family One of the eight children of Joseph Hailwood (1834–1912), and Ellen Hailwood (1839-1916), née Connor, Francis Hailwood was born at Alexandra, Victoria on 3 April 1873. Mick Pleass
George Victor "Mick" Pleass (12 November 1874 – 27 August 1925) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne and Essendon in the VFA and Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Pleass was a follower and played his early football at South Melbourne when they were in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). He participated in their inaugural VFL match and remained with the club until 1904 when he crossed to Essendon, after his transfer to play for Boulder in the Western Australian Goldfields was refused. During his career he represented Victoria at interstate football on three occasions. Bill Jackson (Australian Footballer)
Bill 'Newhaven' Jackson (13 April 1874 – 11 September 1921) was an Australian cyclist and an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Jackson, who was nicknamed after a Melbourne Cup winning horse, came to Essendon from Ballarat Imperials. He played as a follower in the 1898 VFL Grand Final loss to Fitzroy but was also used as a forward during his career. Jackson injured his knee early in Essendon's 1900 semi final encounter with Melbourne and retired. He returned in the 1903 season as captain of St Kilda. Herbert Howson (11 August 1872 – 8 May 1948) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football A wingman, Howson played with South Melbourne for four seasons in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) before he joined their inaugural VFL side in 1897. Eddie Drohan
Edward Patrick Drohan (17 July 1876 – 28 July 1938) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club and Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) before becoming an umpire and a coach. Drohan made his debut for Fitzroy in 1898 and played in their premiership side that year and the following season. In both Grand Finals he played on a wing, the position he occupied for most of his career. Charlie Pannam (footballer, Born 1874)
Charles Henry Pannam (2 October 1874 – 29 October 1952) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) between 1894 and 1896 then in the Victorian Football League (VFL) between 1897 and 1906. He then played for the Richmond Football Club in the VFA in 1907 then in the VFL in 1908. He was senior coach of Richmond in 1907 and 1912. Family The son of a Greek immigrant father, Ioannis ("John") Pannam (1832–1899) and an Australian mother, Anne Pannam (1841–1898), née Hughes, Charles Henry Pannam was born at Daylesford on 2 October 1874. His father's family name of Pannamopoulos had been shortened to Pannam when he emigrated from Greece to Australia in 1856. His father, John, had originally arrived in Newcastle, NSW in 1855, however, he was charged as a deserter and sent back to Greece, only to return and settle the following year. Harry Wright (Australian Footballer)
Herbert Lovegrove Wright (13 April 1870 – 19 March 1950) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club around and during the years following the formation of the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Wright made his debut in 1894, and was part of the Essendon team that won the premiership that year. He won his second premiership in the 1897 season. During that season, he kicked the winning goal for Essendon in the first round final against Geelong. He also played in the first ever VFL Grand Final the following year. A centreman, Wright finished on the losing team on that occasion but took part in a winning Grand Final in 1901, winning his third premiership.
