Ed Valentine
Ed Valentine is a former U.S. soccer player who played with the amateur Fall River, Massachusetts-based club Ponta Delgada S.C. in the mid to late 1940s. Ponta Delgado was runner up in the 1946 National Challenge Cup. The next year, the team won the National Challenge Cup and the National Amateur Cup. This led to the United States Soccer Federation selecting Ponta Delgado to represent the U.S. in the 1947 NAFC Championship. In 1947, the then recently founded North American Football Confederation held its first regional championship, known as the NAFC Championship. On July 13, 1947, Valentine earned his first cap with the U.S. national team in a 5-0 loss to Mexico. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, commonly known as the U.S. Open Cup (USOC), is a knockout cup competition in men's soccer in the United States of America. It is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in that country. The 2023 U.S. Open Cup competition is currently underway, with the qualifying stages taking place from September 17 - December 18, 2022. The competition was first held during the 1913–1914 season as the National Challenge Cup, with Brooklyn Field Club winning a trophy donated by Thomas Dewar for the promotion of American soccer. The National Amateur Cup, also known as the USASA Amateur Cup, is an American soccer competition open to all amateur teams affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation through United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA). In 1923, U.S. Soccer established the National Amateur Cup in response to the growing number of teams entering the open National Challenge Cup (now known as the U.S. Open Cup). The 1923 competition was played through the semifinals, however the tournament was never completed due to inclement weather. 1947 NAFC Championship
The 1947 NAFC Championship was the first association football championship for the North American Football Confederation (NAFC). The first tournament came soon after the founding of the NAFC. Cuba hosted the tournament which included the host national team, Mexico and the United States. Rather than forming a team for the competition, the United States Football Soccer Federation chose to send Ponta Delgada S.C., an amateur team from Fall River, Massachusetts. Ponta Delgada had won both the National Challenge Cup and National Amateur Cup, but was unable to compete with Mexico and Cuba. Mexico easily handled both the U.S. and Cuba, defeating the first 5–0 and the second 3–1. Cuba took second place with a 5–2 victory over the United States. NAFC Championship
The North American Nations Cup and NAFC Championship were association football tournaments for teams in the area of North America. In 1947 and 1949, the NAFC Championship was organized by the North American Football Confederation. Cuba, Mexico, and the United States participated in both editions of the tournament. NAFC merged with the CCCF to form CONCACAF in 1961. After a 41-year absence, another North American championship was organized by the North American Football Union. The North American Nations Cup was contested in 1990 and 1991 by Canada, Mexico, and the United States before the introduction of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The United States men's national soccer team (USMNT) represents the United States in men's international soccer competitions. The team is controlled by the United States Soccer Federation and is a member of FIFA and CONCACAF.
